I don't mind the gore, but the screaming gets on my nerves a bit...

I bought 'The 3rd Birthday' today. It was on sale, it was there, and I kinda wanted the Aya Brea costume for Lightning in Duodecim, so I bought it. I'm somewhere in the first level at the moment, just starting to get the hang of the gameplay (somewhat hampered by the fact that the last thing I was playing was Birth By Sleep - I waste more hand ( Read more... )

If the screaming doesn't get you, the rampant sexism will. It's subtle but its there and I'm actually thinking about returning my copy. Aya was my role model back when the games first came out, and she was always classier back then, snarkier back then, awesomer back then. Like, if you cut and dyed Lightning's hair, made her a cop, then put her in late-90's New York City, that was Aya Brea in the first game.

Third Birthday... Eh... I feel like the macho-male support characters order her around too much, the clothing-degradation mechanic is a bit too gleefully present, a lot of the more science-y elements of the first two games are gone, and the random objectification of Aya('s powers) annoys the hell out of me.

The game is nice and pretty, the guns work well, but the story is sooo sub-par compared to the last two games. <.<;;;

Subtle? As a brick to the face, maybe. I wouldn't mind the clothing degradation if the clothing was remotely sensible - after all, it's realistic for someone to come out of what is effectively a war zone looking worse for wear. But I've looked through her outfits, and aside from the Knight's Armour, the most sensible thing available to this woman is Lightning's outfit. And when Lightning's outfit is the most sensible thing available, something is very wrong...

I did expect her to be a bit more badass, I do admit. (I mean, there is an explanation, and a good one, but it doesn't get explained until the end, by which time you're too annoyed with her characterisation to really care.) Her girly run and the way she gets knocked around and the sounds she makes when she gets hit... It's not quite as bad as Yuna in FFX, but it's close.

But that being said, I like the idea of the Overdive system, even if there is no pseudo-scientific explanation, and I like the Twisted as enemies (their origin is fun, but I think that more could have been ( ... )
