The first time he said it, he was five years old. Elaine was sitting on the front porch, watching Sam play with the neighbor boy; superheroes, by the looks of it. When she thought a little harder, she remembered why they had fallen into that game. When they were playing House, the two were dancing, giggling and twirling around the driveway when Kurt tripped over a rock, making him trip and fall to the ground hard. The moment he looked down at his scraped palms and started to cry, Sam fell to his knees, wrapping the brunette in his arms and insisting that 'Super Sam will save you!' before taking each of Kurt's hands in his own and kissing the reddening skin. Kurt had smiled through his tears and threw his arms around Sam's shoulders, pulling him in a tight hug and saying something about being Mary Jane as long as he got to wear pumps.
Elaine was still grinning when Katherine called Kurt in for dinner. She waved at the woman, giving her a warm grin as the boys said their goodbyes. Sam pulled Kurt tightly into his arms and kissed him on the forehead.
"Bye Kurt!" He said, giving the smaller boy another squeeze before letting him go. Kurt giggled and held onto Sam's hand a moment longer.
"Bye Sammy!" Letting their fingers stay connected until the last possible second, Kurt slowly pulled away before turning and running across the lawn and into his house. Sam watching him go, a small frown settling into his features, before he made his way up the walk to the porch.
"Hey momma?" He asked, climbing a couple of stairs before wriggling his way into her lap.
Elaine laughed. "Yes Sam?"
"I'm gon' marry him, okay?" When she laughed again, he gave her a serious look. "Don't laugh! One day I'm gon' marry him, cause I love him momma!"
Smiling down at the young boy in her lap, Elaine couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with a sense of pride. Despite them both being young and impressionable, Kurt and Sam stuck to who they were and what they knew. It might have just been a childhood crush that would probably fade with age, but it was the first sign of him being so much better than most of the people in the cruel world they lived in.
"I believe you." She insisted, kissing his cheek and pulling him into a hug. "I bet you're gonna have a really pretty wedding."
"Not pretty, momma. Super." Sam corrected. "Like superheroes. Except not really, because Kurt wouldn't like that. It'll be big and awesome though, just wait."

The second time he said it, it was the day after transferring back to the Lima school system. He came bursting through the front door, a giddy smile on his lips as he pushed his bangs from his face. "Mom!"
"In the kitchen, Sam!" Elaine called back, wiping her hands free of flour on her apron as Sam rushed into the kitchen and planted himself in a seat on the opposite side of the island counter.
"Guess who's in Glee Club. Just guess." Sam insisted, leaning forward on his forearms and smiling the widest she'd seen in a while. Leaning over the counter and resting her hands in her palms, she decided to play along.
"Jake Gyllenhaal?"
"God, mom, no. I would have died if he was." He smiled harder, which she hadn't thought possible, and his voice dropped to nearly a whisper. "Kurt Hummel, ma!"
A knowing smile crossed Elaine's face. Though they had moved and many years had passed, pictures of him and Kurt playing, dancing, laughing, even one of Kurt giving Sam a shy peck on the cheek adorned their photo albums, never hidden away as Sam refused to forget. He might not have ever said it again, but Sam most definitely had a soft spot for Kurt Hummel that never seemed to wither away, no matter the time or distance. "Still remember, huh?"
"Of course!" Quickly, he reached out and snatched a cookie off the plate in the center of the island. "Think he does?"
"It's a safe bet he might." She had no real clue if that was true or not, as she'd heard news about Katherine's death years ago and she's be the one to keep all Kurt's childhood memories alive, but it didn't hurt to hope.
"I hope so." He took a bite of the cookie and stood there for a moment, just chewing and thinking. When he swallowed, he grinned up at her again. "I'm gonna marry him, ma."
"Are you now?" She asked, teasing a bit in a way she knew would make him elaborate.
He narrowed his eyes, knowing just what she was doing, but his excitement couldn't be contained and he continued anyway. "Yeah. He's just as awesome as I remember. Except better now. He's gorgeous, sweet, snarky, brilliant, and you can tell me to shut up any time."
"Sounds to me like you should tell him this." She suggested instead, pointing a wooden spoon at him. "Not gonna get anywhere by not saying anything!"
"Yeah." He sighed, leaning on his forearms again. "Yeah, you're right. Thanks ma!" Picking up his backpack again, Sam left the kitchen with cookie in hand and renewed hope in mind.

The third time was the charm. Kurt gave Sam a soft kiss before insisting he had to find Mercedes for their pre-show ritual, and Sam turned to his mom, smiling like a fool.
"I'm so proud of you," Elaine insisted, wrapping her arms around his chest in a hug as he was too tall to hug around the shoulders now. Sam chuckled but hugged her back, squeezing her tight.
"Don't get too sappy, mom. We haven't won yet."
"But it's Nationals. Again. Just..." Pulling back, she cupped his face and made him look at her. "Remember us little people when you become a famous singer."
Laughing harder, he pulled her back into the hug. "You're crazy, you know that right?"
"Only because you make me that way." She reminded. It was tough to believe that he was a senior, already eighteen and soon graduating, the first few steps in completely leaving the nest for her to occupy alone. "God, you're getting too old. You're done aging until I say otherwise."
"Mom..." He shook his head, but couldn't stop from smiling fondly. They stood in silence for a few minutes, just listening to one of the opposing show choirs in the background, until Sam finally gathered up the courage he was looking for. "Ma... I'm going to marry him."
"I know you are, Sammy. I know." She assured, taking his hand and rubbing the back of it with her thumb gently. When he gave her a questioning look, she elaborated. "I've always known. You were always sweet to that boy, and a mother's intuition goes a long way."
"I'm serious though, mom." Reaching into the pocket of his dress pants wtih his free hand, he pulled out a small box, opening it to reveal a small, silver ring. "Maybe not next month, maybe not next year, but I'm going to marry him. I'm making sure of it."
"Sam!" She exclaimed, dropping his hand to take hold of the box. "Thank god I raised you right. This is beautiful."
"He deserves the best." Sam noted, grinning down at the box in pride. She looked back up at him, eyes shimmering slightly with unshed tears.
"Well, he's certainly got it, doesn't he?"
