When was the last time you fell completely in love with a film?

I saw 'Ruby Sparks' last night.  Basically it's a film about an author with writer's block (Paul Dano) who has a dream about a girl and starts writing about her, and she comes to life.  Sounds a bit like a mushy/fantasy rom-com?  Well, it's not.

- Ruby reminded me of Summer (Zooey Deschanel) from '500 Days of Summer' (if you liked that, you might love 'Ruby Sparks').  She's one of those wilfully quirky girls who usually gets on my nerves because surely nobody is like that in real life, but Ruby is endearing and not half as annoying as Summer.  She mentions once or twice that she's a mess, and messy, but I didn't see it - she's a good cook, pretty, etc.  She's played by Zoe Kazan, who apparently is Dano's long-term girlfriend in real life, and he wrote this part for her.  I've added her to my list of people I would quite like to be.

- Paul Dano is brilliant.  Seriously brilliant.  Also seriously good-looking.  Why don't I know any guys like Calvin, the author who Dano plays?

- Plot: Carries on as you might expect (Calvin thinks he's seeing things when she appears, cue amusing sections where he asks other people if they can see her too, etc).  Things get interesting when he notices that she's drifting away, becoming more independant of him - he adds small bits to her story, which come true.  This too is amusing for a while, but then all of a sudden turns sinister and odd and creepy, making this film a lot deeper and smarter and more twisted than the fluff of '500 Days'.  The climax of the film is kind of heart-breaking.

In short: see this film.  I promise you'll like it.
