Soul Food, part 1

May 31, 2005 09:08

Last night I had a fun little discussion with wewearthemask regarding the concept of the soul. I thought I would try to expand upon my thoughts a bit here, and as this post got a little long, I guess I will continue it over the next few days ( Read more... )

Interesting topic. Immortality. Is there someplace we end up? Is there really an afterlife? Is all this made up by orgainzed religion to get their minions to do their bidding? "If you work hard now, you will be rewarded in heaven" or even more timely "If you blow yourself up for Allah...". I am beiginning to think it's the latter ( ... )

If one must investigate the chance of no life after death, isn't one also obligated to ivestigate the chance that life may exist beyond the grave? Would you give the opportunity to investigate whether or not certain life experiences have led you to choose this belief over the other? If one's views may have been clouded by experiences, isn't it also harder for one to ascertain an objective belief about said subject? And, isn't it also intelligent to give the same chance to both futures? 50% chance to mortality, 50% to immortality. No one knows the future. People tend to go for the more cynical of choices usually. This is done to buffer ones emotions, a coping mechanism, in case things do actually turn out poorly. i.e. "See, I knew I wouldn't get the job." Without knowing what the future holds both cases should then be given equal opportunity for fruition. Yes? No?

Thanks for your post. If you think this one was long, wait until I post part 2 (still in progress).

As for the lightning, it's not really so much that I take it structure on faith, it's more that it is not important enough for me to care what it is made of. My fate in the afterlife should be of somewhat more consequence as should the choices I make in my life that result from my beliefs. Besides, I never said that faith was bad, I just said that if we are to have faith in something, there should at least be a smidge of evidence backing it up.

Lightning has had research performed and evidence gathered that support its hypothesis. Not only that, the research has been validated within the general scientific community. For me, that is enough. I will trust them, besides, like I said, it really doesn't matter to me nor impact my daily living.

But you bring up good points, if I ever take this line of thought beyond that of a random post in lj, I will certainly make that point a bit clearer.
