Question for the day?

When did you introduce a sippy cup? And if you breastfed and had to pump, what flow of nipple did you use when your child was 6 months and older? I've read that breastfed babies need a slower flow nipple because it comes out more like when he nurses. Should I up it to a sippy cup or a faster flowing nipple? Just curious.

Elliot was 6 months old, at Easter. We got him a little 2 handled one. I think we did when he was able to grasp objects with both hands. I bet it would be great practice for conner!

I think Clara was a little younger just because we already had sippy cups in the house. I think she was also about 6 months and it seems like we had just moved in this house.

Not sure about the nipple.

I think she started taking sippy cups around 8 months or so, when she was eating a lot of solid food. We tried to let her play with them, but she was basically chewing on them, not drinking on them, before 8 months.

Averie wouldn't take a bottle unless it had a fast nipple, EVER. It was like she knew it wasn't booby so she wasn't going to work on it. I think you should be able to switch him at this point - the nipple confusion thing shouldn't be an issue now. I would wait to use the sippy as his source of milk during the day because he won't be good at it, but use it to practice, like with little sips of water if you want when he's having solids or whatever.

We're trying the sippy cup now, with just water in it for practice. We've given it to him a few times since about 6 months old, but he mostly just chews on the spout. It's the Avent one... Rylan started refusing the bottle with the newborn nipples (which he used to take just fine), but will take it a little better with the faster flowing nipples...

I just now re-read this post and I see that you're asking if you should use a sippy cup instead of a bottle. I don't think so! You want him to work for the milk so he'll continue to work "you" for the milk when he's nursing. I'd go with a faster flowing nipple and save the sippy cup for occasional water/juice when he's a little older.
