Another ceasefire.

And of course, a few minutes before its start, as they do, the Hamas shot several rockets, At Beer Sheva, Ashdod, etc., and one on Tel-Aviv. Which fell in an open space without a siren, again. I think it was a bit further than it was the previous time, though it certainly frightened the cats ( Read more... )

"Only" 3000? Seems quite a lot to me...

And yeah, not much progress to expect. I wonder what the diversion of the world's attention to other war-zones will do. Hinder or help?
(We even had a longish article on Nigeria in the daily paper today. That's usually the last mentioned.)

Well, it's about a third of what they started with. They launched a third, we estimate that we destroyed a third, and a third is left. I had a theory that our prime minister will just try to draw out the current state until they spend their last rockets and then we can all go back to running our lives, but of course, this won't work. They'll just space them out, and they might succeed in making some new ones. A lot of the rockets - at least the short range ones - are produced locally in Gaza.

Nigeria? Maybe because of this recent Ebola scare, there is more attention towards Africa. But ISIS don't seem to like being upstaged. They have a level of atrocities that reminds me of the good old days of the Roman Empire, or maybe the Huns. Distraction? Nah. If it involves Israel, it's always more interesting than just barbarians killing each other. :-/

I thought more about Boko Haram and those missing girls. Quite the issue, here.

IS as the new Huns sounds just about right!
And I'm afraid it's all about casualties. Whoever manages the high-score body-count of the day gets the headlines...

(At least one of the presenters on German tv seems to feel the impact already. He is elderly, and more or less completely fed up jumping from crisis to crisis lately. I really felt for him. He might get sacked shortly, the way he shows his sadness and impotent rage - just as I would, in his place. I don't even know his name, sadly.)

I'm not sure it's about the head-count per se. I think it's actually about striking fear into the hearts of their enemies. Be as atrocious as possible - like that kid proudly holding the head of a beheaded Syrian soldier. It's about making the population docile, and making enemy soldiers run away instead of fighting. Many soldiers are prepared to die. But torture, mutilation etc. are a different thing.

I'm glad you're holding up alright. I've been meaning to talk to you about things over there for years. We're going to have to chat one day.
