Also--and I think this is mostly Peter Jackson's fault--THoU!Merry is a damnsight smarter than Dom portrayed him. THoU!Merry is a scholar. MovieMerry is.....well. Not.
I adore Dom, and Dom's portrayal of Merry, but yes, Benedict would have made a brilliant Merry. Actually, he'd make a brilliant pretty much anything. Here's a compromise: a contemporary-based film, with Dom and Benedict (with his natural gorgeous hair) cast as...siblings, maybe???
Yeah,I think Benedict would have a hard time convincing folks that he isn't a smart cookie, thus I can see why he appeals to you on several points as the Merry in your head.
As for Dom, who as Merry, I admit took me some time to warm up to, I have to say he did play Merry smart, but was hampered by whatever morsels PJ gave him. Its painfully obvious that his best parts ended up on the cutting room floor when ROTK came out. Must have about gutted him. Thank God for the extended version.
I agree--PJ clearly didn't value Dom as much as he truly should have. Mind, I was seriously okay with Pippin getting the spotlight--but great goddamn, he had so much more to do in the books that he just wasn't allowed to do or given the proper credit for, like his *crucial* hamstringing of the Witch King. Yeah, it was there, but it was never mentioned afterwards. WTF? HE CRIPPLED THE FREAKIN' WITCH KING OF ANGMAR FOR VALAR'S SAKES.
