Some Thoughts on Prop 8 Backlash

Nov 09, 2008 20:58

For the record, I just want to say, I am very upset about Proposition 8 passing and I would never defend the actions of the LDS Church in contributing to this travesty of justice. I hate that bill. If only for narcissistic reasons. My mom sent me a really nasty e-mail challenging me to "defend my actions" and she'd "give me a fighting chance to defend myself" if I'd admit that I was WRONG for putting a disparaging comment about Prop Eight on my facebook. Ugh. Prop eight was petty enough as it is, now I don't even know if i can show my face at thanksgiving!

Ugh, yeah. The thing that upsets me most about the backlash is how much harder it makes it for people who are gay and gay rights supporters to justify themselves with LDS family and friends. LDS people don't really need even more reasons to feel threatened by homosexuality and I feel like the attacks on Mormons being lodged completely erode the moral high ground. I think it's particularly sad because if any group should be sympathetic to people wanting to define marriage in a different way it should be Mormons.

P.S. I'm coming home for Christmas at the end of December and we should totally hang out.

Hi! anonymous November 14 2008, 18:21:09 UTC
I found your blog via Jessica Knickerbocker's blog. I am from Iowa and now live in SLC, so I was excited to see you went to Grinnell. I just wanted to say "hi," but I couldn't use your send-a-message feature for some reason!

Great blog, will keep reading!

I can't figure out how to post my ID, but my blogs are at http://www.findingslc.com and http://www.theweishenmefiles.blogspot.com. You can see some pictures and video of last week's Prop 8 rally at Finding SLC.

Well, I mean, the Mormon church did dump $20 million dollars into the Prop-8 campaign, and that money does come from the tithes of the membership, so while individual church members may be much more open-minded than their leadership, they're still supporting, financially, whatever their leadership chooses to do ( ... )
