[Although the pair appeared on the Plane together, it was clear from the moment of their arrival - from the expressions on their faces - that they had reacted to a shared experience in very different ways. Leela pulled her arm from Hiccup's panicked grip - he was holding it so tightly that his knuckles were turning white - and put her hands on her hips. She looked surprised and irritated, but, fortunately for the young Viking, she was not angry. Not yet.]
Why did you bring me back here? I was not going to hurt them. I was only going to help!
[She did not understand the nature of the bond that linked their minds together, but she did not have to. Hiccup had been frightened and, as far as Leela was concerned, that was all that mattered. He was scared of those who claimed to teach him the ways of the warrior, but she would show him - show them - how a real warrior fought.]
It's j-j-just ... it's just ... [It was just that he had been scared soundless, a Gronkel heading his way to bite his head off, and then, Thor knows how, Leela - Leela, of all people! - had just appeared out of nowhere, and it was so ... not good.] I just ... I just didn't know what to do! I-I-I-I ... there were the others. And the Gronkel, w-who I think has some issues an-and then you and then I didn't know what do I didn't ... I just ...
[Hiccup finally lets go off the shield he was holding, trying to calm down.]
I know there were others. That was why I could not leave you there alone ... [Leela sighed, her expression softening as she attempted to deal with his terror. She placed a comforting hand on Hiccup's shoulder.] I could feel it. Your fear. I do not know how, but I could feel it.
[She shook her head, wondering at the foolishness of the people of his tribe. You could not force a person to become a warrior. Some people were scholars, or medicine men, or - on Gallifrey, at least - politicians. You could not change what was in their heart by pushing them too hard.]
Even if I had not felt it, I would have been able to see it in your eyes. You are still shaking. What sort of friend would leave you to face such things alone?
How is this possible, you weren't even there ..? Well, first you weren't but then you were, and-and-and ... [Then he stared at Leela. Had she really said they were friends?]
Thank you ... I-I was really scared. I mean that ... dragon was deaf, I think. O-or something like that. And afraid and ... I'll never be as good in fighting as they want me to be, Leela. Or as good a you.
You need a better teacher. [Suddenly, she gives him the triumphant grin of someone who has finally worked out exactly how to help.] I will be your teacher!
