twenty-first pact ❖ {mitternacht}

[The ever-present stars refuse to shine through the inky dark substance that seeps out of every shadow and every crevice of the Plane. It pools and gathers around a single silhouette. Tendrils of dark energy seem to coat the humanoid shape, or perhaps they're part of it; they rise from the monster like wisps of steam. Those who know him might ( Read more... )

[Riku was going to start with the monsters as he made his way toward something that, honestly, reminds him of damn near everything about his past... but he quickly catches onto their reluctance to fight, and so decides to leave them alone. It frees him up to dash toward Emil, sword drawn.

He has no questions, no desire to try talking to this monstrosity. He heard all he needed to hear already. He comes up behind Emil, with no hesitation, and swings.]

[Emil doesn't even turn around. It seems like Riku is about to get a clean swing, but then the darkness surges up to meet him with the strength of a brick wall. The wall melts away as Emil turns to face his attacker, sword still at his side.]

What are you doing?

[His voice is forceful, sarcastic, and mocking.]

Hahahahah... hahaha! I think I see it. You just want my power, don't you? You're just another insect! What the hell do you think you're even worth!?

[The darkness ripples again, then lets out a squelch as it forms a line of icy pillars, trying to impale the keyblader where he stands.]

[Riku kicks off of the solid form of defense, landing easily, just in time to begin darting around the sharp icicles. Nice try, but he's seen that trick before.]

I couldn't care less about your power. [Faint smirk] I just don't like the way you look.

[He rushes in again, a flurry of slashes and strikes, mostly aimed at his face. He expects full retaliation from the dark spirit, but he's ready.]

I don't like the way you smell.

[Another barrier appears without hesitation. It's like the darkness itself is an extension of Emil's will. That should not be surprising. He parries each one of Riku's blows tirelessly, then waits for an opening to kick the keywielder back.]

Humans are worthless. Half-elves are worthless. All of you need to die!

[Botta blinks at the strange entity, and draws his sword at the obvious threat, gathering his magical defenses as well. He's not going to be the first to attack, though, especially given who this looks like...]

...Emil? [He doesn't want to believe it. In fact, having met Aster already, he'll take just about any excuse not to believe it.]

[Maybe if Emil fell into a vat of ink. There's a moment of hesitation, a soft pleading name in a voice Botta knows very well.] Botta--

[And then it's replaced with a level red glare and a terrible grin.]

You.

[It's Emil. Emil is in there somewhere, and recognizes him, but whatever's in control right now...is not him. Dread curdles in the pit of Botta's stomach.]

Emil! You have to fight it! [He's searching those red eyes for any further sign of the Emil he knows. Little bro...]

Emil never existed.

[The shadows hiss and convulse. He drops to a crouch, but that doesn't make him seem any smaller-- more like a cat waiting to pounce.]

I remember. Even if you don't. I remember!

[Suddenly, two tentacle-like extensions of darkness sweep from the floor, trying to knock Botta around.]

[Of all the things he expected to occur today-hang out with Richter, maybe even run into Emil-this isn't one of them. Well, he supposes that he's half right. This is Emil. An eerily familiar part of him. It occurs to him that leaving would be the wisest choice, but he can't leave like this. Despite all his suspicions about the boy, there was still a part of him that was very kind. Aster liked Emil. Cloned body and all.

He may be a genius, but most people would probably call him an idiot now. Aster doesn't bother to hide. There's no point to it. With a serious, but concerned tone, he says]

Emil.

[His voice makes the darkness stir, and the hunched shape bearing that name contorts until it seems to spread terrible wings. A menacing grin plasters itself to his face.]

Why aren't you running?

Ratatosk.

[At that moment, he realizes just how powerful this entity is. There had been power before when he was killed on the spot, but this is different. It's everything he wanted to prevent right in front of his eyes. Still, even though his brain tells him to run, his feet stay firmly planted on the ground.]

What are you doing this for? So many people could be harmed. You have to stop this!

[Not to mention the negative effects that have yet to be seen. Rampaging summon spirit? Probably not good for the worlds that meet here.]

Heh. Why should I care? [His tone is callous and cold despite his expression.] I'm a monster. If I leave them alone, they'll destroy everything!

[There's something distinctly wrong with his manner, though, like he's struggling. A soft uncertainty warring with the ideals of the creature he's become.]

Yeah, that's right. I'm a protector... the guardian of...

[He shakes his head fiercely.]

Of course they could be harmed! It's what they deserve.

[Speaking of half-elves, here's one that should look familiar]

What-

[while he draws his weapons without hesitation, the fact that he doesn't immediately attack gives away his uncertainty. Richter's voice goes from uncertain to determined]

Emil? ... Or are you Ratatosk?

[The noise makes his head snap in Richter's direction. At first he's only some twisted dark creature, but then he stands up to a seemingly towering height. Darkness seeps from his very skin, covers him like living ink.]

How many times do you have to kill me before you're satisfied, half-elf?

[He spreads his great, terrible wings and lets out a low laugh.]

Maybe I should repay the favor.

[there was a pained expression on his face for a moment - 'Emil, what happened?' - before turning into a neutral look. Now wasn't the time for emotional outbursts]

You can try all you like. I won't let myself be killed by the likes of you.

[Richter raises his weapons. And even if he was doing his best to keep calm, there was one thing that troubled him...]

Though I have one question; what have you done with Emil?

I didn't do anything. He's gone, just like he's supposed to be.

[His voice turns mocking. He raises his arm and his sword with it, the ambient light catching the blood and... whatever else caked on the blade.]

Isn't that what you wanted?

[the Doctor has a way of avoiding the nastier creatures; certainly thinking they're all beautiful and so very fascinating in their own right is a way, but he can't help wondering what has brought them to the Plane. nowhere else has he seen (and run away from) these creatures, but above all, he can't help but feel that something than that is very, very wrong. and it's that feeling alone that drives him on. if it's something that could harm his friends and any innocents on the Plane, then he's going to stop it.]

[Something is wrong. At some point in the Doctor's wandering, the starry floor disappears, obscured by some strange foggy substance. The source is a small, boyish shape huddled within the darkness. He still has the aura of anyone on the Plane, but he's like a shadow; the edges of his form flicker, blur, and disappear.

He looks up as the Doctor approaches. Those eyes are definitely... uh, different. But the voice is... creepy as hell, but definitely cranky!Emil.]

Why do you save them?

[the voice and appearance don't bother him. he's seen friends transformed and overtaken like this before--and it never gets any easier. he can only look upon Emil with pity and sadness in his eyes]

Because everyone deserves a chance to live.

[He knows a look of pity when he sees one. He's determined not to give up, but he's so tired, too.]

The last time I gave them that chance, they ruined it all. They took everything from me. Why do they deserve to live?
