The wings are rather irritating, aren't they?

As for an explanation, suffice to say we're on a different world, trapped by a group of people who want to use use for... something. It's all vague and not at all helpful.

I heard about that. I assume that's on purpose: easily killable experimental subjects. Easy to quash uprisings and so on.
