All i can say is wow. What a different world. I think i needed this really. I pretty homesick. I really miss my friends. So far i've made more military buddies... but its kinda tough for me to make Japanese friends. I've tried so i'll have to myself credit. I guess ill be more persistent. Ah, yes, Japan. You're totally right about the making friends in large cities versus small towns/villages issue. Imagine what it was like for me trying to make friends in the mainland (read: Tokyo) versus Okinawa. Okinawa is much more westernized than the mainland, at least from what I've seen. The phenomena that I've seen little of, but read much more about is the gaijin civilian coming to Japan to work. To tell the truth, the American working stiff and the Japanese salaryman are two different species as far as professional or business culture are concerned. Companies are (or at least the used to be) like cults in Japan, wheras we look at our occupations as "just a job." There was this website, a photoblog in fact, wherein this American guy chronicled his experiences as a gaijin professional. If I find the link, I'll post it here for you. Really interesting stuff.

yeah i feel you on teh small cities. Military cats just make gaijins have a bad name with the bad ass mentality. Rapes dont help either. Bleh. Ive made it a habit of hiding the shit out of my military id when i enter clubs and grow a stache before the weekend hits haha. Sucks to see racism towards other asian races prevalent here. I hope I find some more open individuals here.

Not just military types, but Americans in general have a bad name worldwide because of our aggressive, "we're-the-best-there-is" mentality. G-Dub and the NeoCon Allstars haven't helped matters, either.
