Conan was not a planned child. His parents were career minded and were more focused on the companies they were president and vice president for. Conan came as a surprise and had it not been for how bad it would have been for public image if Conan was aborted, he might not have been born. However, born he was and he was almost immediately left to be tended to by maids and nannies. His parents gave him everything he might ask for as he was going around and while they did not hate their son, the love the Edogawas showed could be best described as a pet. Feed him, make sure he's not sick, make sure he isn't causing trouble, and give him a little attention. Otherwise they don't pay him any mind.

Conan, admittedly, is a bit resentful of his parents for this. He was naturally a bright child and not having the most maternal of care givers, he quickly became independent. He did things whenever he was capable and if he couldn't find a way to do what he wanted, patiently waited until he could get someone to do it. Because of this tendency, when he met other children his age, they were usually put off by his mature attitude and often thought him a snob. As such, Conan chose to spend most of his time reading or people watching. He liked to wander off, going to new places and just watch people there.

At age four, he met someone who observed people with him and told him about the 'deduction game.' Basically using observations about people to make an estimate at the time of people they are. About two hours later, Conan would learn this was actually his distant cousin, Kudo Shinichi, whose father was asked to come and investigate a death of one of his parents' employees. Conan took an immediate shine to Shinichi and the Kudo family and he got his first recommendation of Sherlock Holmes from Shinichi. Not to mention the start of his love for soccer.

He'd often write to Shinichi, asking questions about being a detective and such, as well as confirmations about the Holmes books as he struggled through to read them. He managed to make it through all of them in a year, having been especially drawn to the books after learning the author was his namesake. It honestly made him feel like he was actually CONNECTED to someone through his name.

At age five, on January 9th, an even that would shape the rest of Edogawa Conan's life and his personality occurred. Finally Conan's tendency to run off on his own and being the single small child of a wealthy family finally caught up to him. He was kidnapped and for the reason of being a witness, a boy named Kazama was grabbed with him. Kazama dealt with the kidnapping better than Conan. Mature as he was, danger was something that only happened in books or to other people. Conan had been terrified and for the first time in his life, actually wished aloud for his parents.

Kazama was the one who helped him work through it. Telling him stories of his father and how good of a cop he was, he was sure they would be saved. This comforted Conan and he started to believe it too. In the end, his parents did pay the ransom, about a week afterwards. They hadn't even noticed Conan was gone until mid way through the week when they finally found the ransom note among all their mail.

Of course they weren't going to return the children. They knew their faces and that was their whole reason in grabbing Kazama. Conan was decided to die second, saying that his parents bought him an extra minute. Conan watched as Kazama's throat was slit. The knife was put at his neck...

Then the police barged through the door. Conan had used the distraction to kick away from the kidnapper and hurry to Kazama, but it had been too late. After seeing his first real friend die, Conan, understandably, broke down. The kidnappers, already being bad people and angry at being caught, laughed at Conan, saying how pitiful he was and all he could was cry uselessly as people died. Words that shook Conan to his core.

From that day forward, Conan had sworn to never again show a criminal weakness again. Of course Conan was sent to therapy , where the therapist finally suggested that maybe it'd be better if Conan went somewhere else to relax. Since Conan had always shown a fondness for the Kudos, he was sent to go live with Agasa, the responsible adult who could care for the basic needs of a child, and where Shinichi would help watch him so Agasa wasn't worn out too much due to his old age.

The day of Conan's arrival did not go as planned. When he arrived at Agasa's house, he hadn't seen Agasa home, but lights in the Kudo house. He decided to investigate the house and see if Agasa was there and came to overhear Shinichi talking to the old Professor. About poison and men in black and things he didn't fully understand at the time. Shinichi had to leave then and had left so fast, he hadn't noticed Conan and was only found a minute later by Agasa. About ten minutes after that, by Ran who had come looking for Shinichi.

Agasa wasn't sure if he could care for Conan as well without the help of Shinichi, especially with how serious things had gotten, and had asked Ran for help. She had accepted and thus, Conan came to live with the Mouri's. It was the first case though, that got to him the most. And it was with that case he fell in love with Ran.

Over the next few weeks, Conan helped Kogoro with his cases in secret, having managed to convince Agasa early on he could help with the cases. He used a bit of...blackmail to help though. Namely in telling Ran the truth about why Shinichi had gone. He only knew part of the truth at the time, but it was enough to get a start and after Agasa heard how the cases REALLY went, he started to trust in Conan's ability.

Then things got weird. First the train, where he was just testing out the listening device. It just so happened to listen in on Gin and Vodka's conversations about the bomb. And then the Billion Yen Robbery Case. One of the cases that really shook Conan as he heard the familiar phrase from the woman he failed.

It was then Conan found out about the men in black. Just as he did to get the devices, Conan used what little information he had to force the whole truth out of Agasa. Thus began Conan's involvement with the Black Organization which just got deeper and deeper as time wore on. Then came Haibara Ai. Eventually Conan would find out she was one who defected from the Organization and Agasa had explained everything to her. She told Conan off, saying little kids shouldn't get involved. While she came at first because she thought it possible Kudo Shinichi had shrunk too, since Conan had borrowed some old clothes of Shinichi's for more variety, and came to him for help. Agasa had explained the real situation to her.

Then Haibara saw Conan's skill first hand, resulting in her break down at why this 'amazing kid' had been so slow for her sister. But since then, she had been more willing to listen to what Conan had to say, even if she didn't want him involved in the case. Not that Conan listened. He still investigated, getting deeper and deeper into the case, his deductive skills growing all the while.

Which was why, for a time, Hattori Heiji became convinced Conan WAS Shinichi. Of course, Conan kept trying to correct him and only finally proved that he was someone else at the school play. Hattori had to apologize profusely for doubting him, though he's still in the habit of calling him Kudo. Conan just thinks he's a weird adult, though he also liked him. After all, Hattori was one of the few who acknowledged Conan's intelligence.

Conan hasn't been able to tell Shinichi that he knows yet. And he's also rather angry at his cousin. While he still admires and adores Shinichi, he hates what he's done to Ran and won't forgive him until he finally comes home. Until then, Conan plans to continue investigating the Black Organization to help him along.

As a side note, something Conan doesn't know about the situation. He does know Shinichi managed to not swallow the Apotoxin, but he doesn't know that to do that, he had bit down on the pill. While he spat up most of the poison, some still got into him. The dosage wasn't strong enough to kill him or activate the side effect, but it has done damage to his heart where he'll suffer pain spasms. Haibara's cure for the Apotoxin is a hope of his to cure his heart.
