Who: Ed and Al What: Getting the stones! Where: Underground city When: Er. Near future. WE'RE AHEAD OF OURSELVES. Why: We're bored and want to do Ed and Al stuff.
Edward still could barely believe that his little brother had his body back and could now grow up normally, like he always should have been able to do. It grated a little on his guilt knowing that he hadn't been able to do it for Alphonse, but as long as it had been done, he was happy as anything. Happier than he'd been for a long time, in fact. "You're sure that everything's . . . working right, right?" he asked for about the thousandth time since he'd first seen his brother's real body.
"Yes, brother, I'm sure! Stop worrying so much," he answered, laughing a little, for the thousandth time as well. Edward probably wouldn't stop asking him questions like that until years later. "Everything's working fine, and I'm happy." He really was happy. Now they would just have to concentrate on getting Ed's limbs back. He smiled honestly at Edward, before adding softly, "Thank you."
Edward smiled a little sadly but quickly wiped it away because, dammit, there was nothing to be sad about! His brother had his life back and everything could be normal! Well, as normal as their lives were going to get, which was fine by Edward. "I dunno what you're thanking me for," he said, turning to watch his footing as they descended the stairs to the underground city. "It's not like I did anything."
Alphonse almost stopped short. Hadn't done anything? Clearly, Edward was crazy. It was true that, no, in the end, Edward hadn't been the one to give him his body back. But he'd been there and he had tried, risking everything, to get it back. And that somehow counted more than being human again. "Not like you did anything? You're delusional! Who spent the last few years risking his life to get our bodies back? That counts, you know. Counts for a lot. I've got a lot to thank you for."
