I have to make sure that I find things to do for the characters that are not the focal point but which don't spoil the flow of the story.
Yes! I've found myself needing to do that sometimes too! Especially in a fandom like D&D where you have a very ensemble cast and need to make sure the other 4-5 characters (if you include Uni!) aren't just standing around, doing nothing!
Very much so, especially as I have a 'slight' bias to writing H/S. The fic I am working on at the moment has that problem. H/S are separated from the others and I know exactly what I am going to do with them, and how they all meet up again. I just have no clue at the moment what the others are going to be doing in the mean time.
Bickering, most likely! (Diana and Eric with a poor,long-suffering Presto! Not to mention a tense little Barbarian who, depending on the nature of the separation, is probably worried about his sister. I can see you doing a few things there - for comedy, or not!) :)
There is a funny line or two for the others but I tend to be better with short fics for comedy. Eric and company are not entirely in character. As for Bobby, he is missing Sheila but I would be giving too much away if I told you exactly what he was thinking.
