Summary: Raido is called away while on his way to meet Iruka.
As promised, Raido slept for a short fifteen minutes before he woke up and dressed quickly. If he pushed it, he would be only a few minutes late. Heck, if that girl was as high-maintenance as she looked, he would be early. He locked Iruka's door behind him and jumped off the balcony, landing on the street below easily before running to his apartment.
He felt the man's presence before he even turned the corner, so he slowed down to a walk, groaning audibly. The man met him at the corner, nodding at Raido's silent question.
"Shit."
The man chuckled a little at Raido's quiet exclamation. "You had plans?"
"Yeah," Raido sighed. "Do I have time to leave a note?"
"We have time. The others are on the training fields right now, so they'll be easy enough to call in." He stared at Raido's rumpled clothes. "Were you sleeping?"
"Pre-date nap," Raido lied with a shrug, but the captain wasn't buying it.
"Pre-date? Looks more post-coital to me."
"Yeah, well, I'm just lucky that way," Raido said with a wink and a smug smile.
Retracing his steps back to Iruka's apartment, he scribbled down a note and then tacked it to his friend's door. Raido thought for moment, then opened the note again and added an invitation. "What?" he asked the man, trying to read the note over his shoulder.
"Nothing. Just wondering how a scar-face like you rates so much attention."
Raido laughed, remembering a time when a comment like that would have sent him into a depression for days. "Told you. I'm just lucky that way."
The man laughed as well, jumping to the roof. "Luck, huh?" he grinned back as Raido followed him. "So who lives here? Your date or your pre-date fuck?"
"I'm hoping it will be my post-meeting date."
"Which I'm sure will turn into a post-date fuck," the man grumbled. "Namiashi, when the hell do you have time to actually work?"
Raido answered with another grin and a shrug. As they jumped from rooftop to rooftop in the dark, the wind carried the complaints of the man in front of him, grumbling about a certain somebody hogging all the women in the village.

"So that makes three threats, and one attempt."
The mood in the room was tense, but not overly so. Raido relaxed a little, going over the events of the previous three days. "Was it really an attempt?" he asked. Something didn't seem right about the whole thing. It had been ridiculously easy to catch the would-be assassin.
"Just so," the ANBU captain nodded. "We have to assume these are valid threats, but either the real target is unknown..."
"Or we're dealing with a packload of amateurs," another man answered, absently picking at his fingers with a kunai.
Only one threat had been made against Sandaime, while the other two were against two of the visiting nobles. The attempted attack had occurred mid-morning, when a messenger was apprehended carrying a scroll with an exploding tag embedded in it.
"The messenger claims he doesn't know anything about the tag."
"Is he still with T&I?" Raido asked, sitting up again.
The captain nodded. "He is, and so far nothing. We're not sure if T&I is going to step up the interrogation or let him go. We should know more soon - by morning at the latest."
"What do you think, Namiashi? You're the professional bodyguard."
Raido drummed his fingers against the table, thinking. "My gut says cancel the rest of the meeting and send those annoying whiners home."
"Your gut or your ears?"
"Both," Raido admitted, joining in the laughter that erupted across the room.
"But if we cancel, and if one of these threats is real..."
"We'll lose our chance to find out the truth."
"The banquet is tomorrow evening. That would be the most obvious time for an attack," Raido said finally, his mind working furiously. "The guest list isn't extensive, but if you add in waitstaff and servants, that's a lot of people to watch at once."
"We'll call in some more help," the captain replied evenly, staring at Raido. "Keep your attention on the Hokage."
"But if one of the lords is killed, that would be bad for Konoha."
Raido shrugged. He had been in these situations before. It was never easy to sit back and watch these things unfold. "What if the Hokage is the target? Or if there's more than one attempt? If we're dealing with a group of assassins, it is likely several attempts would be made at the same time."
"Right," the captain sighed. "Okay, let's go over what we have so far."
The rest of the men, Raido included, stifled their groans. They had been over it three times, and the captain wasn't any closer to a battle plan.
Finally, three hours later, the captain relented. T&I weren't finished with their interrogation, but he didn't want to wait anymore. "For now, we guard the Hokage. We'll have more guards posted, one for each noble, and a special team waiting to extract the Hokage if an attack is made. I'll be with that group, so you'll know it's us, Namiashi."
"And the assassin?" Raido asked with a grin.
"Once the Hokage is safe, try to take him, or them, alive. Ignore the nobles. If the messenger was telling the truth, it's likely there are accomplices placed somewhere in the village. I'll alert the perimeter teams to be on high alert, and we'll put our own people at the entrance for the next few days."
"We could be dealing with two or more assassins, hired by different people."
"Exactly," the captain nodded back. He smiled when Raido groaned. "I know, it's a clusterfuck just waiting to happen. Sounds like your kind of party, Namiashi," he said with a leer.
Raido chuckled, but shook his head. "A clusterfuck with kunai and exploding tags? Not sure what kind of parties you go to, Captain, but it's definitely not my scene."
"Pleae don't say 'clusterfuck' when talking about those whiny old men," another man shuddered. "Just listening to them makes my skin crawl."
"Then be glad you're a ninja and not a concubine, Ryo," the captain snarled back. "And if something does happen, keep it quiet. We don't want to spook the civilians if we don't have to."
The captain followed Raido out when the meeting broke up. "I don't need to remind you to get some sleep, right?" he joked, nudging Raido's arm.
"I need to eat first. And it's only 10:30, Captain."
"Fine, fine, just don't stay up too late. We're going to have a long day tomorrow. Try to show up early so we can go over the final report from T&I." He smirked again before turning and heading off down a different street. "I'd invite you out with us for dinner, but it looks like you have other plans."
Raido grinned back and nodded. "Yup, I'm full of plans tonight."
