Summary: Kakashi and Iruka continue their fight after Kakashi nominates Team 7 for the chunin exams.
Staring at the door, he thought of disappearing, of taking a long mission, full of danger and far away. But no, the first test was in a few days. He had to at least wait and see if she showed up. So he tried counting, not to 10, but 10,000. By prime numbers. It didn't help. This kind of anger wasn't going to just burn itself out. Might as well get this over with. He sighed and knocked.
The door opened almost immediately. The man inside stared at him coldly, his anger so startlingly visible on his face.
"Have you reconsidered?"
If Kakashi thought he couldn't get any angrier, he was wrong.
"It was foolish of me to think you were ready to be reasonable," he shot back, turning to leave.
Iruka was just a bit faster and reached out, locking a hand around Kakashi's wrist, pulling him inside and slamming the door behind them.
Kakashi was a master of arguing in a whisper, and he put that skill to good use. Iruka was a little less skilled, but he made an effort.
"You had no right to question me like that."
"No right! I had every right! Somebody needed to say something."
"They're not your students any more."
"Exactly, they're yours! And you should be more concerned with their well-being than your own ego!"
Kakashi kicked off his shoes and left them in the middle of the hallway as he followed Iruka into the tiny bedroom.
"MY ego? You're the one with the ego problem."
"Because I want them to be ready? Because I worry about what could happen?"
Iruka pulled Kakashi's vest off, tossing it aside. Kakashi pulled his shirt off - the room was getting stuffy from the late-afternoon sun.
"Why were you even there? It's not like you have anything to do with this."
He yanked Iruka's hitai-ate off, and Iruka grunted in response when his hair tie came with it painfully.
"I was invited as one of three representatives for the Academy. We all had former students up for consideration today."
Shoving Kakashi roughly to sit on the bed, Iruka bent down, pulling Kakashi's leg wrappings off. Kakashi had Iruka's shirt half-off as they struggled to see who would finish first.
"You were invited as a courtesy, NOT as a participant. Once they leave your classroom, you don't have any say in the matter.
Kakashi stood up, removing his waist pouch and gloves while Iruka unwrapped the shuriken holder.
"And YOU were there because somebody thought you might have a CLUE how to take care of a genin team! What a joke!"
Mostly undressed now, Kakashi pulled his mask down and crushed his mouth against Iruka's harshly. Iruka's hands worked the buttons of Kakashi's pants loose, pushing them down lean muscled legs before returning Kakashi's kiss in kind.
It was familiar, but fortunately not quite routine, these fights. Words continued to flow, pausing only for another harsh kiss. Strong hands clung to tense bodies until both men were pressed together, naked, panting from their peculiar foreplay.
Iruka pushed Kakashi onto the bed again, kneeling on hard wood to take the nearly-erect cock in his mouth. Kakashi groaned at the sensation but did not stop his low, intense diatribe. With Iruka's mouth busy, Kakashi gave his free reign, alternately stroking and pulling the man's hair.
He was momentarily distracted when he looked down and realized he could see. Everything. The sun lit the room clearly. It was the first time, he realized, they had met during the day. He pulled Iruka away roughly, murmuring, "Too close." With sunlight turning Iruka's skin gold, it wasn't a lie.
Reaching into the nightstand, Kakashi pulled out the half-empty bottle of lube stashed there. Iruka returned to the thread of his argument, as if the brief period of enforced silence had added a new grievance to the list. He kneeled on the bed and bent forward, hands clutching the foot of the bed tightly and voice wavering when Kakashi pushed slick fingers inside. Kakashi answered with equal fervor, both in voice and action. Revisiting points and counter-points, his fingers provided all the exclamation marks he needed.
"If they fail, they fail. I don't expect them to fail, but it might do them some good to have to work for something together."
Iruka pushed back against Kakashi's hand, back arching. Kakashi's breath caught when the sun dipped from under the clouds and he lost his train of thought for a moment.
"Bastard! Are you even listening to me?"
Kakashi bit back a chuckle. To laugh now would infuriate Iruka. First rule of Fighting Fair - stick to the topic. He pulled his fingers out and flipped Iruka over onto his back.
"I'll listen to you when you have something relevant to say. They're not children any more. It's time you stop coddling them."
He sat back on the bed, fists clenched on his thighs. He could feel the warmth of the sun on his back, uncomfortably warm. But to turn around would expose his face to the window. Reaching out his hands, he pulled Iruka onto his lap.
"But they aren't adults, either, and it's up to the ADULTS to protect them. Naruto said that's what you promised - to protect them."
Clenching his teeth, Kakashi breathed deeply as he felt Iruka push down, slowly but steadily. Iruka's eyes were closed, his head thrown back as he concentrated on staying relaxed through the first intense moments of penetration. Kakashi clasped his hands around Iruka's hips, quivering with tension until he felt Iruka sigh against his ear. He began to rock his body, lifting Iruka up slightly with his rhythm.
"This is about Naruto, not the others. I noticed you didn't give Asuma or Kurenai near the argument you gave me."
Iruka clung to Kakashi's back, face buried against a pale neck. His voice was a little softer and slightly sad.
"I don't know them. I expected better from you. I thought you understood Naruto better now. How hard it will be for him if he fails."
The room was quiet then, only a desperate panting filling it instead of angry, hissing words.
"I was almost happy," Iruka said at last. "When Mizuki...when Naruto saved me. It meant I didn't have to fail him. Again."
Kakashi stopped and pulled Iruka's arms from his back. Taking the man's face in his hands, he looked directly into Iruka's eyes.
"Naruto has grown a lot since then. He never gives up. And he wans this, wants to prove himself so badly it's hard not to get excited for him."
Iruka flushed and they continued, their movements more fluid now.
"Even if he fails, can't you let go enough to let him try?" Kakashi asked gently.
He pulled Iruka close and Iruka kissed him, no longer the harsh kisses of anger. The argument wasn't quite over, but the tension in the room shifted and Kakashi groaned in response to the flash of passion in Iruka's eyes.
Kakashi felt Iruka tense and shudder. He fumbled for the lube again, letting it fall to the floor once he'd managed to pour some on his hand. He slipped a hand between their bodies, fisting Iruka's cock until Iruka responded, using his hold around Kakashi's shoulder to slam down, harder, driving them both to shuddering groans.
It was hard to keep his eyes open, Kakashi decided, so hard to keep Iruka away from his body even this tiny distance, but Kakashi wanted to SEE, see every thrust, every twitch on Iruka's face now that his vision wasn't clouded in anger. The way the sweat made Iruka's hair cling to his neck. The way he bit his lip or opened his mouth in a low gasp when Kakashi changed angles. The way the sun lit his hair, revealing multiple shades of brown and gold usually hidden in the ponytail.
"Iruka...fuck!" Kakashi gasped when Iruka met one of his upward thrusts. "Iruka, quickly! Close!"
Fuck! Kakashi did NOT want to come first. He wanted to see.
He leaned forward, his teeth finding the spot on Iruka's neck, just under his left ear that would drive the man into a passion all on its own. Iruka threw back his neck, pushing forward, hands tangling in Kakashi's hair forcefully. His body shook before he arched and went rigid, and Kakashi pulled back, still thrusting, eyes wide to catch every nuance.
"Ka-ngh! Kakashi. Ngh! Ah!"
Kakashi stared until he felt his own body tense in response, white and blue sparks behind his eyes, and he gave in to them, closing his eyes to allow them to shoot up and down his spine. He slammed into Iruka one last time, crushing the man to his chest as he groaned softly.
"Iruka."
They clung to each other, all pants and shudders and sweat dripping from the heat. Moving just enough to pull out, Kakashi kept his hold on Iruka, kissing him deeply, the way he would have from the start.
"You're watching me so intently," Iruka said finally, blushing slightly from Kakashi's gaze.
Kakashi could laugh now, so he did. "You were so busy fighting with me, you forgot it was still daylight."
He tightened his hold and chuckled again.
"It was really quite...astonishing...actually. I could see everything clearly."
He dropped his voice to a seductive whisper as Iruka squirmed in embarrassment. "You're mesmerizing in the sunlight. I had trouble focusing."
"Kakashi!" Iruka choked out, still pushing, but Kakashi was unmovable. He shifted their bodies until they were prone on the bed, facing each other on their sides. Tracing the scar across Iruka's nose gently, he smiled.
"So you see I was right, don't you?"
Iruka bristled at that, opening his mouth to retort heatedly.
"About fighting and making up at the same time," Kakashi added quickly, before Iruka could respond.
Iruka blushed again, but his eyes narrowed a bit. Then he shrugged.
"You're supposed to be a genius, right?"
Kakashi nodded. "That's what they say." He nuzzled Iruka's jaw, still smiling.
"When did you decide to do this?" Iruka asked in an even tone.
"A few weeks ago," Kakashi sighed. It looked like the fight wasn't finished.
"You should have told me then."
"Would you have responded any differently?" Kakashi asked, coming up on his elbow.
"Probably not," Iruka admitted. "But we could have been fighting about this for weeks by now." His eyes flashed and Kakashi detected the playful gleam in them that always took his breath away.
"You mean?"
Iruka nodded. "Mmm-hmm. Just like this. For weeks."
He sat up and stretched gingerly, his arms throwing shadows across the dim room.
"I guess it's too late for that, though. Some genius."
He smirked and stood up, walking across the room to the tiny shower. Kakashi lay back, half on, half off the bed, shaking his head. Some genius, indeed. Damn.
