If I've visitors I'm generally clean and tidy; otherwise just the former is important and the latter is a matter of mood

My mum and dad live in a spotless, cleam and tidy house. Mum gets up at 5:30am each morning so she can begin her cleaning regime. Her view is that she's very lucky that dad works and brings in enough money so that she doesn't have to go to work so she wants to make sure he has a clean and tidy house to live in ( ... )

My thought is stuff it. I've got so many things to do I can't do everything and I want to start doing things that I want to do when I want to do them.

Hear Hear.

Hold onto that thought.

Wow, they really say things like that to you? I can understand why you'd be upset. To be honest I'd understand if you were homicidally enraged ( ... )

That last comment makes me think of something my step-father-in-law said about my sister-in-law after the birth of her first child. SIL had really worked hard to get into nursing and got offered a place shortly after my niece came along and was starting to excel at her career choice.

I was discussing how well she'd done with my SFIL and (quietly) pushing him to give her some sort of compliment. He thought for a moment and came out with "Well I'll give her this she does keep a clean house and a clean child".

The pinnacle of praise!!!!

If you spray furniture polish by the front door, visitors think you've spent the day polishing ;-)

yeah, 'til they see how dull & unshiny all the wood-based items in your home are...

Y'know, funnily enough I was thinking about exactly this sort of thing last night. It was a culmination of factors - seeing yet another clean, tidy abode, coupled with vague considerations as to whether I should try to 'do' something for my birthday this year. Basically, I was thinking that if I ever wanted to invite anyone over, apart from those few who've known us for years and are used to it, I'd have to spend at least a week cleaning & tidying.

This would be more for my benefit than anyone else's. I don't think that people I consider friends would necessarily 'judge' me by the state of the place (and I don't think anyone would contract any illnesses!) but it might make some slightly uncomfortable. However, it would make me very uncomfortable if most people saw the house in its usual state ( ... )

Your house live-in sounds like our house live in.

Maybe we could talk them into moving in together ;-)

(and your point is soo much more elegantly put than mine)

I refuse to move out on account of my chronic untidyness!
