My mum and dad live in a spotless, cleam and tidy house. Mum gets up at 5:30am each morning so she can begin her cleaning regime. Her view is that she's very lucky that dad works and brings in enough money so that she doesn't have to go to work so she wants to make sure he has a clean and tidy house to live in

That last comment makes me think of something my step-father-in-law said about my sister-in-law after the birth of her first child. SIL had really worked hard to get into nursing and got offered a place shortly after my niece came along and was starting to excel at her career choice.
I was discussing how well she'd done with my SFIL and (quietly) pushing him to give her some sort of compliment. He thought for a moment and came out with "Well I'll give her this she does keep a clean house and a clean child".
Y'know, funnily enough I was thinking about exactly this sort of thing last night. It was a culmination of factors - seeing yet another clean, tidy abode, coupled with vague considerations as to whether I should try to 'do' something for my birthday this year. Basically, I was thinking that if I ever wanted to invite anyone over, apart from those few who've known us for years and are used to it, I'd have to spend at least a week cleaning & tidying.
This would be more for my benefit than anyone else's. I don't think that people I consider friends would necessarily 'judge' me by the state of the place (and I don't think anyone would contract any illnesses!) but it might make some slightly uncomfortable. However, it would make me very uncomfortable if most people saw the house in its usual state

Maybe we could talk them into moving in together ;-)
