Based on Moffat's interviews, he's going towards the "darker" side of The Doctor.

I'm betting something more akin to the master-manipulator of the later (that is good) McCoy era, meaning he set this all in motion to bring a circle of events to fruition which prevents his own death while still resolving the temporal nexus.
