Ocean Spray responded to my letter rather promptly.
Thank you for contacting Ocean Spray regarding OCEAN SPRAYjellied
cranberry sauce. We were sorry to learn
of your disappointment with what we consider to be an exciting package.
The two-piece can was developed to be more environmentally-friendly because
it uses less metal, therefore
produces less waste; and, with its rounded bottom, the two-piece can is
easier to stack in your pantry. The can also
features fewer seams, so it is less likely to create food safety issues.
Removing sauce from the new two-piece can requires just a few simple steps.
Start by opening the top of the can
with a hand-held or automatic can opener. Remove the lid entirely. Hold
the can in one hand. (Don't tip it down too
far, in case it starts to fall out.) Insert a flat knife between the
cranberry log and the can and sweep carefully around
the inside of the can several times. Invert the can over your serving
platter, and give the can a gentle shake or two.
The cranberry log should slip easily onto the platter. If necessary, loosen
it a little more with the flat knife. Serve the
log with a knife for slicing; a butter knife works great.
We are sorry to hear that you did not find this package design to be
convenient. We take your comments seriously,
and have passed them on to our Marketing Department. We will be sending
you replacement coupons in the mail.
Thank you for choosing Ocean Spray.

Sort of sounds like they thought I couldn't read the instructions on the can or something, even though when I wrote to them I reiterated the instructions that I read.
I was on the phone with my sister when I got the reply, and I read it to her, and she said, well, I had a problem too, so I guess I should write to them too.
dear ocean spray,
Im writing you about my disappointment with your "new" cranberry sauce cans. They say that they are easier to use, i would have to disagree. through my entire life me and my family have all always LOVED cranberry sauce and we were all taught to open both sides of the can and it slides right out. Easy enough, I thought. Then one day me and my mother are making a nice southern meal, and we try and open the cranberry, and to our astonishment the can had been changed and we could no longer open it the way we were accustomed to. we then read the directions (feeling offly silly) and it said to open the can and slide a knife in between the can and the sauce, and shake for the "log" to come out. we did...and it didn't work. it had now been between 3 and 5 minutes that were were working on getting the sauce out, and if we had the "old" can it would have been less than a minute. We ended up having to have my little brother hold the can while my mother poked the bottom with a kitchen knife, and it slid out FINALLY. please understand that we can read and understand directions, but this can IS NOT easier and more convenient. me and my mother would love to see the old can again.
This must either mean that this is a problem for most people, or that my family is exceptionally retarded when it comes to cranberry sauce.
Really, friends, if you want the old can back, you gotta write to OceanSpray, and at the very least, you will get some coupons out of the deal.
