Well as you all know the pope is no more. I bought the newspaper the day after the announcement, so now I have a couple of wonderful Italian newspapers of "The Annunciation." I think you should totally go to Rome, at least once, while this whole thing is going down. You're witnessing history!

As for feeling like your forward momentum's been sucked away, here's my suggestion: Remember why you wanted to go to Florence in the first place. Remember all of the work you had to do to go. Remember all of the people who wanted you to go, who think of you and who can't wait to see you come home. All of that, i'd say, and more is enough to jumpstart anyone's momentum. We never appreciate these types of things while we're in the middle of them but after the fact they become the crux of who we've become and recognizing it at the time just might make these last 33 days worth the last two months. Go for it.

I was watching the funeral procession this morning on 'Today' and I turned to my roomate and said, "Wouldn't it be weird if the camera was panning the crowd and all of a sudden there was Jared with a poster that said 'Hi mom!' or 'It's my grandma's 100th birthday today!'" I'm going to hell, I know. But I concur with Adric, you can't miss that stuff, it's once in a lifetime...just don't bring any posters :).

if you have the chance to see il nuovo papa i think you should... it'd be cool if nothing elese (though i can see why you'd not want to be in rome with 60 million of your closest friends).

i know how many times i've seen pictures of the crowds... i can only imagine the wall to wall pope watch o're there.

as for the trains... i guess musselini got something right.

see you in 33 days
