hmm, not sure if you're referring to what I think you're referring to, or who you're quoting (if at all?), but here's my 0.02:
I'd say it's bad, although he probably doesn't realise it or doesn't give a fuck because it is making him shitloads of money anyway - limited edition, anyone? martijn seems to like it though *shrugs*
I'm sorry - I was pulling half an experiment, half a trick. The above is yet another Lester Bang's quote - it's an album critic about a Miles Davis record from the 70's. I replaced all the "Miles" with him or he...because I couldn't help but be reminded of Ghosts...so I figured it might elicite the same in some other people...
And yeah...I'm irritated too at how much creative energy seems to go into packaging, visuals, distribution etc. etc...
i wasn't expecting you guys to like it too much, but then again, the above may be misleading and i may not actually know what you're talking about at all :)
You're right, it's actually about Miles Davis...about Ghosts I don't allow myself to have an opinion yet, since I haven't listened to it enough. Can't say I'm dying to have it on high rotation here though, which might be a bad sign, but which might only mean that I don't understand the whole genius of it yet...
How/why were you thinking it would sooo not be up our street then ? It's quite reminiscent of TDS and Fragile era sound scapes I think, so in theory I should dig it ? There are even a bunch of sicklish guitars..so that's good in a way. I'd really be intrigued about your thoughts...
It's ambient in a way that i wasn't sure you guys would like. There is guitar but it's not like, out there in front (to me at least). I think from having said you guys wouldn't be interested in an acoustic tour, I wasn't sure if you'd dig it. And actually I don't think we ever talked about if you liked NIN instrumentals or not. hah. I like it, I think it's really interesting and different and not the kind of thing that would have ever been released on a major label. But I don't think it'll be in heavy rotation either, just because the nature of it is very chill and is more something I'd relax to than something I'd listen to regularly. Just like "still"...i love it to death, but don't listen to it alot. It's like a special occasion thing that I need to be in the right mental state for.
(since you're talking plural even if i'm not from here..)
I don't think the issue is about "chill", or "acoustic" or "electronic" vs. "electric".. what i still haven't found here (and i hardly had the time and/or the dedication to search yet) is some dynamics in there that would lead to the music really affecting me. These tracks, they stretch in time, complexify, rarefy, whatever.. but i don't find here the pull that draws the arrow to its target, so to speak (it could be a very meandering pull, i'm not about straight lines here.) The tension (not only the suspense..) - i would still need to look for it.
(and i wouldn't say the same about still btw.)
I think that's my issue too with "ambient" music in the general meaning - something that would hang in the air in the room, in a somewhat non intrusive way. But thing is - i WANT to be intruded upon, i want to not be able to hold my train of thoughts anymore.. what would be the point of listening to music otherwise ?

I've found it's actually a good album to sleep to, so at it least it serves a purpose ;)
