The Fat Lady Has Not Yet Sung

If you think it's over, it isn't. stewardess tells us a very, very plausible reason for the purge.

The censorship is not over, and if LJ does go public, it will never be the haven it was in its days before SixApart.

cordelia_v suggests it might be time for fandom to migrate. I think so, too. What do you think? PLEASE pimp this poll far and wide!

JournalFen isn't "not free".

I'm very much a lurker these days, but I hope fandom stays. As someone else pointed out we/you are part of the product. If recognized and accepted that could just possible end up being a plus leaving fandom with a safer home than it's ever had before.

If fandom does leave, then I think it will be an organic shift as it ws to LJ. i don't think the answer will be constructed from polls results, although it's interesting to see what people think at the moment.

I thought you had to pay for an account there -- is that not the case?

No, you just have to be invited by a paying member, I believe.

I think the idea of moving fandom is unworkable. I mean, we aren't a company or anything. We are a group of various individuals. If this move did take place, how would it be done? A post somewhere : Um, btw, we're moving to a completely different place for our fanfiction. You are required to follow us, or you won't get to see anymore fic ( ... )

You make some good points. Since you've been here since 2001, you must remember the big shift to LJ from Yahoo!groups after their Great Purge. It started by a few coming here, then a few more, and as people found out and got linked to fic and discussion being posted here, more people joined... it was a pretty organic thing, like you said. A shift didn't entirely occur, either: fic and discussion is still posted at lots and lots of Yahoo groups, and not all of the participants there have or even want a livejournal. For me, the interaction and the people I "hung out with" in fandom were mostly moving here, so I did, too. Fandom on the internet has a definite market force; people go to where the content is. If the content I want to be part of starts taking place at GreatestJournal, then that's where I'll go to read, and where I'll want to respond, too, either through commenting or posting of my own. But I don't think anyone is making any decisions, now, and it's not a decision people can make for anyone else, just themselves ( ... )

I definetly agree with you. But, if you think that "If a shift happens at all, it will be a slow, organic thing with lots and lots of discussion, and everyone making their own decisions over the course of months and years," then why did you post this poll? I'm sure you didn't mean to make it seem that way, but the way you stated you opinion and constructed this poll, you kind of implied, in my opinion anyway, that a decision needs to be made right now, and that one poll will have an effect on how people will choose to act. I really don't mean to be argumentitive, I just think that everyone needs to be careful about dealing with the issues still remaining on LJ. Now that the big scare is over, I think we should take a breather before another one is created.
Of course, the most important thing is that we stick together in the event that LJ screws up again.
Thanks for your opinions and your information. You've created a great discussion.

Yeah. I don't *want* to move fandom. I don't want to lose my friends. I don't want to scatter. That'd be a last resort I think. What we need to do is prove our power and stay our grounds.

Wherever you move to the same thing will eventually happen all over again - best to stay put and argue the reasoned case here and get them "on side" (which seems to be happening in the aftermath anyway, once they realised how many of the paid/perm accounts were fandom types no dout *g*)

I have thought about setting up a backup journal elsewhere (I write het and slash p0rny fanfic), but a lot has to happen before I seriously consider jumping ship from LJ.

There are a lot of 'ifs' involved. IF 6A goes public. IF they crack down on more than just 'kiddie p0rn'.

And there's no guarantee that the same thing won't happen elsewhere -- WFI and their ilk can find us there too. Any America-based company is going to be subject to the same pressures.

My attitude right now is wait and see. Like it or not, 6A is a private company that can set whatever terms they want for their service, and we can either abide by the rules or go elsewhere.

But if they don't follow their own rules, or enforce them according to someone else's agenda, that's a whole other story.
