CHARACTER NAME: Kaworu Nagisa
FANDOM: Neon Genesis Evangelion (it's important to point out he's from the mangaverse)
CANON: Before revealing that he is an Angel.
WHAT THEY LOST: His abilities as an Angel.
PERSONALITY: A person's first impression of Kaworu is that he is quiet, observant and wise - in the sense that he's well aware of what is going on around him. He's mostly seen with a smile (rather, a smirk) on his face, keeping most of his thoughts to himself (though he often voices inconvenient opinions) - so it becomes obvious that there's a lot of mystery to him.
Genuinely curious and somewhat naive when it comes to human customs and socialization skills, Kaworu finds himself striking one's nerves more often than not, though the reactions he causes usually come off as surprising or disappointing to him. Though he seems very wise and knowledgeable about certain habits and psychologic aspect of humans, there's also a lot he doesn't understand (or know how to handle), mostly due to the lack of interactive experiences he's had throughout his life - which is why the way he behaves after Rei's will and emotions flow to him (during the battle against the Angel Armisael) is so blunt and inconvenient.
Unlike his anime counterpart, Kaworu shows streaks of jealousy, selfishness, rudeness and brutal honesty, throwing out his opinions with a smirk and/or condescending smile or making demands with a visibly upset expression. You can say that, despite knowing how to keep a secret, he isn't all that good at hiding his emotions (it could be either because he doesn't really know how, or simply because he doesn't care). He has a logical and objective sense of prioritization; logical solutions, etc. and is unable of comprehending (or taking into account) the human factors that, in his opinion, only end up complicating matters even further without necessity. Any expressions of surprise and/or confusion always appear to be somewhat ambiguous, however.
Following the same train of thoughts, it's curious to point out that, despite having his mindset in following the orders of the 'old men' (as he refers to them) from SEELE, who have sent him to NERV to keep close watch on the Third Child and make sure their plans aren't ruined by Gendo Ikari, Kaworu lets his main objective get a little sidetracked by attempting to analyze those surrounding him, though in the end he doesn't let them shake his thoughts. The flow of Rei's emotions into him apparently cause him to demonstrate an ever bigger interest in Shinji, beyond that which he was meant to during his mission, leading him to take actions that only end up pushing him further away. This upsets Kaworu, who fails to understand how to cope with these feelings - or why Shinji won't accept them, despite all his efforts.
Even knowing what his mission is and what the reason he exists (or is even alive) is, there's a reason Kaworu became known as the 'Tabris, the Angel of Free Will': even knowing he does not have a choice, he desperately seeks to have one. He wishes to take control of his life, which has been conditioned entirely by those who created his body and brought him up since the Second Impact. At the end of his life (which has not yet happened at the chosen canon point), being faced with no alternatives other than death, he still chooses the manner in which he will die.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Kaworu threw the magazine against the wall, only seconds after trying to convince himself that whatever he (wasn't) reading was more interesting than what had taken place minutes ago.
A look. Going home?
Yeah. Sorry for staying over so many days.
Kaworu frowned. Shinji wouldn't even bother to turn his head and face him.
The albino boy sat up, arching an eyebrow. He curled up his lips, cynically-- despite everything, Shinji's actions and words were so predictable.
Sorry, huh? You don't really mean that, do you?
The brunet lowered his head, slightly, and Kaworu slouched, softening his expression; perhaps a little taken aback by the reaction he'd caused. Suddenly, it seemed like some guilt was noticeable in Shinji's tone, and Kaworu wondered what it was founded on: did he actually feel bad for having taken up his personal space (if could even be considered as such, as it held no meaning to the inquisitive boy other than being the quarters appointed to him), or simply because the falsity of his words had been called out? No - it had to be the latter.
I'm very grateful. See you later.
Shinji didn't look back for one second, and the door shut, leaving Kaworu alone and looking away, unseeing. He begun sinking into his own thoughts, and that unpleasant feeling clutching at his chest and making him desire he'd heard other words surfaced again. It was troublesome, and though he felt curiosity for it, he also found himself wishing it had never appeared at all. Was this how Lilim felt all the time?
It was more of a question than an observation at this point, since he had barely begun experiencing them himself. Self-absorption, jealousy, being centered on the well-being of an individual instead of caring about the greater good (for selfish reasons, no doubt) ... Indeed, they were so complicated. Kaworu didn't like it. All of their matters were so small, insignificant - though entertaining enough to observe - they only clouded their thoughts and led them to make poor decisions.
Rei Ayanami, the First Child... she who possessed the soul of Lilith in a human body, who had been created and brought up under conditions very similar to his own - even she had been able to develop these emotions on her own, simply by talking to and living alongside Lilim.
Despite being split apart in individual bodies, separated by the protective walls around their souls... were all those who interacted with them really condemned to be infected by their emotions?
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: ... I have to say that this situation is very inconvenient, to say the least.
I have no recollection of having been sent--or appointed--to this place, so I believe it is safe to assume that wasn't the case.
It does not appear to be a kidnapping; the conditions do not match. I am free to leave my room and use this device to interact with others... So is this an experiment, of sorts? To observe how I would react, faced with adversities I do not comprehend, for reasons that have been kept from me?
Whomever was thoughtful enough to plan this surely must not have left anything to chance, so it would be pointless to expect to be missed or found by those who would notice my absence.
Hm. I might as well introduce myself to the community and satisfy the curiosity of those observing us, isn't that right? It would be the correct thing to do.
My name is Kaworu Nagisa. I am the Fifth Child, assigned to Tokyo-3's NERV Headquarters to be the substitute pilot of Evangelion Unit 02.
I'm sure it will be interesting to make your acquaintance.
