I think maybe online commenting somehow brings out the worst in people. At least the initial online comments on articles about my (postnatally depressed) friend's suicide a couple years ago were mostly either "at least the $#%@ loony didn't off the kid too" or, more generously, "clearly this poor idiot was a victim of pressure to breastfeed." I decided pretty fast it was best not to read any more of them.
I have a friend who was a fan of the backpack leash, and so was his daughter, at least as a 2-3 year old. I recall once hanging out with him while she was in the room watching Finding Nemo. At some exciting point she suddenly popped up, ran to a bag by the door, grabbed something, and scampered back; on the way past him she gave him the just-retrieved leash, took the other end and plunked back down to watch the movie after announcing confidently "I scared, but safe now."
