We were "mandatorily evacuated" from our house last night by the police. I do not kid.

They said an explosive device had been found "quite nearby" and that they expected to take care of it quickly, but if they couldn't the Red Cross would make overnight arrangements for us.

We had dinner guests over, so that obviously did not go according to plan

I understand your anger, and your feeling that if you talk about it it will overwhelm you. Five months after the referendum I still feel that way. :(

I have moved on from "science project" to "abandoned Halloween costume" as one report was that it was fake dynamite, which immediately made me imagine a cartoon bundle with a gigantic alarm clock on top. And you're absolutely right, we did think, why here? Why not over thataway where the guy with all the money is? Which just goes to show that it probably was entirely unintentional, whatever it was.

I stand by my earlier essay on the election, circa the primary. Anne Coulter, of all people, backs me up! She's tweeted that the last time the Republicans has the Presidency, the Senate, and the House was in 1928! Her grasp of the implications of history is, um, truly stunning.
