One amusing theory of why it is supposed to be offensive, which I doubt is correct, is the use of fish with cladistics. Unless of course we are fish too, which wouldn't bother me. But that is the only way fish could be a clade, if all tetrapods were too. I bet the boring part has a lot more to do with it. But I know some little kids who would like it. However, their dad has tried to explain some parts of evolution to them and other parts of science to them, and have since they were 3 or 4. It was amusing listening to him give an explanation to kids to young to be able to correctly pronounce some of the words. But the older one is starting to show a definite interest in science and he has been teaching her some basic things about how to do experiments.
