My yuletide gifts; reveal post

I got two awesome yuletide gifts this year, one Oscar Wilde and one Dave Brandstetter fic. They are both awesome and you should read them!

My main gift has an amazing Oscar POV and his voice is spot on. Bosie is very in character, too, and the story does an aweome job exploring their complicated relationship.

Fandom: 19th Century CE RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Relationships: Oscar Wilde/Lord Alfred Douglas, Lord Alfred Douglas/Lionel Johnson
Characters: Oscar Wilde, Robbie Ross, Lionel Johnson, Lord Alfred AKA Bosie Douglas
Summary:
Oscar had met a lot of boys in his life, but there would only ever be one Bosie Douglas.

The extra treat I got is set right after the first Brandstetter novel, Fadeout. I've always wanted to know what would happen then! The story is an excellent Dave/Doug piece that never forgets how both Dave and Doug are still dwelling in the past.

I Found my Way (5028 words) by
Rebecca
Fandom: Lewis (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: James Hathaway/Original Male Character
Characters: James Hathaway, Original Male Character
Summary:
There's still too much of himself that James prefers to hide away because the alternative seems rather scary.

My assigned fandom was Lewis, specifically Hathaway. Two things I picked up from the prompt were to include some insight on Hathaway's seminary days and to pair him with an original male character. On the one hand I loved that assignment because Hathaway is such a complicated character with many hints to an interesting background that never really get fully resolved. There's much potential for fic I'd be interested in reading myself. On the other hand I was a bit intimitdated because Hathaway's very enigmatic, I find it hard to get inside his head, and most of the things that are important to him (theology, religion, catholicism, philosophy, English literature) I don't know much about myself.

But the internet to the rescue! I did research quite a bit for this: reasons to enter seminary, leave seminary, join a religious order etc, stuff about friaries and what have you. Fun! Some interesting tidbits I found: the writers of Lewis make stuff up, too! St Gerard's, a location featuring quite prominently in one episode, doesn't exist. The Oxfordshire Police doesn't exist (it's Thames Valley Police in RL.) And although I chose the name Michael for the OC soley because it's a very common name for men of his age, I stumbled upon the fact (while researching something else) that St Michael is the patriot saint of policemen. How fitting. :D And there's this cute video of Dominican friars having a snowball fight.

The idea of inserting quotes came relatively late when I was still fighting the underwritten-ness of the fic and was grasping for stuff to add without being boring. Underwriting is a common problem for me-editing always means adding-but it felt worse than usual this time. But if someone is thinking in quotes, I think it would be Hathaway! Plus, researching quotes is so much fun!

An der Nordseeküste (1163 words) by

Fandom: Glennkill | Three Bags Full - Leonie Swann
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: The Sheep, Rebecca Flock
Summary:
"Wir fahren an die Nordsee!", verkündete Rebecca eines morgens. Doch wo ist das Meer?

As for the treat I wrote: The moment Glennkill was nominated, I knew I was going to offer it. How often do you get to write about cute little sheep? I started to re-read the books then because of all the things I offered it was the fandom that would take me longest to review, and I've been meaning to re-read anyway. Well, I didn't get matched on Glennkill. My assignment took some time, but I resolved to write at least a short madness ficlet. One evening I had an idea for said short ficlet and sat down to write it. Three hours later I had a full-length fic that didn't even need that much editing. Since I'm normally a slow writer, that was a bit of a surprise for me. This was also the first time in over four years that I wrote a fic in German, which was quite nice.

Overall, it was a great Yuletide. ♥
