Speaking of healthcare

On Thursday, Amitai had surgery for a deviated septum. They kept him overnight for observation because he had low platelet counts. Then, the doctors decided to keep him for a second night because he was still bleeding a little. This morning, Jonah and I visited, thinking we might be picking him up. I'm sorry the hospital stay has dragged on, and hope you do indeed get to bring him home. I'm more sorry for Jonah's trauma. (Not to minimize Ami's ordeal, but he's a big boy.) At least he was distractable; that sounds promising.

I can definitely see how daddy in the hospital can be scary for Jonah. When Chris was in the hospital for his back surgery, his mom and I took turns staying home with the kids, so that they wouldn't see him like that. Even without seeing Chris, the stress took its toll on both kids. Gwen reverted to diapers and Lance started to wet the bed more frequently. Gwen had some upset tummy issues too. I'll let you, as a mom, interpret what I mean by that ;-) And both acted out more often for a couple of weeks. I think the thing that helped them the most was to have a blunt conversation about what was happening. They both knew that the doctor cut open their dad's back to fix it, and that dad would be lying in bed for a little while to get better. They asked me questions, and I didn't dodge anything they asked. (Of course, I didn't tell them the worst case scenarios or anything like that. In that way, I simplified things to be less scary.)
