Battered, barely able to stand, he gazed across the bleak landscape. What had once been houses, office buildings, and shops were now reduced to piles of smoldering rubble. Once busy streets, filled with life, now lay eerily silent; even the wind held its breath as he looked upon his failure. Where was everyone? Was he the only one left? How the hell had this happened? They'd beaten that white-haired fuck...hadn't they?
"Kanami..."
He could still feel her, still hear her voice--now growing ever fainter--as she called to him over the link they shared. Fading...fading...and finally, silence.
"No! Kanami!"
Stumbling forward, he fell, staggered back onto his feet, took a few shambling steps forward and fell again. It didn't matter. He'd get there if he had to crawl all the way.
