ENVY

Damon has always wanted what he can’t have.
Katherine had chosen Stefan, but she had also chosen him and it angered him, not having her to himself. It made him bitter, clouded his judgment, and ultimately turned him against the one person in his life he had an excuse to love unconditionally: his own brother. Love had made him weak, and envy had exploited this weakness. Damon promised himself after Katherine’s death that he would never allow himself to be weak again.
So when he saw Elena’s witch friend with that blond-haired Mutt (or was it Matt?), he was unpleasantly surprised by the flare of emotion he felt. It was rage, hunger, weakness.
And it had to stop.
