This afternoon, while I was in class, my 92 year old neighbor got swindled out of $400 by two guys who claimed they were going to redo his driveway. Needless to say, they took his money and never returned to do the job ( Read more... )

That's so sad! I hate when good, trusting people are cheated. It's just not right, and no excuse in the world will make it right.

I know. =/ I know bad things happen and all, but when it happens to people who are completely harmless and innocent it really makes me mad.

Aww! How could people do such a thing? Or anything really... but come on! Older people are just so innocent.

I know! I really do try to see the good in people, but its so hard when someone could hurt someone who's so innocent and defenseless.

That is awful. I don't know how people can do that. I can barely tell a lie!

That's true. You're the worst liar ever.

Anyway, out of curiousity, as a social worker do you imagine yourself working with the elderly man or the people who swindled him? I think I'm more likely to get the people who swindled him as clients...

I would say that I would more likely work with the elderly man. Not necessarily because I wouldn't want to work with delinquents at some point, but I really do enjoy working with the elderly and they seem to respond really well to me and my methods. I'm actually looking into social work with seniors as a career goal.

What does that mean? Seniors on disability or living in poverty? I'm just wondering what the rules are for why people would require a social worker. Like, all of my clients were both homeless and suffering from a mental illness. I imagine that social workers have a lot of people without mental illness, so they must require help for something else. Hmm. Maybe investigating elder abuse cases? I don't know. I'm just trying to figure it out.
