your atrocious quote of the day, ladies and gentlemen....

Tennessee state Senator Doug Henry: “Rape, ladies and gentlemen, is not today what rape was. Rape, when I was learning these things, was the violation of a chaste woman, against her will, by some party not her spouse. Today it’s simply, ‘Let’s don’t go forward with this act.’ ”

also, saying "let's not go foward with this" like no one has the ability to decide that actually, this is not what they want. no, siree. no changing our minds here.

i hate people like this, most especially men like this, who refuse to believe that women are still treated like second-class citizens in this country precisely because of their attitudes.

happy v-day, indeed.

I agree, but let's expand this notion... caeli_san February 15 2008, 18:41:52 UTC
While I believe I understand the core concept that the senator was trying to address, I agree that his perception of what should be considered rape is too narrow and automatically imposes a degree of inferiority upon women. I have to comment though, what's he going on about in that last statement: "Let’s don’t go forward with this act." It is true that the definition of what rape is has changed over the years, and seems to have become quite complicated, even variable depending on the political and socio-economic environments the victim, accused, and court exist within ( ... )

Of course the definition of rape is different now than it was when he "learned' about it. Women are no longer considered inferior, less intelligent, or property in the eyes of men and the law. That changes everything - as well it should.

There definitely is still a sticky situation when one partner changes her (or his) mind once the act has started.

Wait, wait, hold on. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me like you've got this confused:
"If a woman doesn't want to be raped, all she has to say is "Let's not go forward with this act"? SERIOUSLY?!!"
When I listened to him, what I got out of it was that now for something to be considered rape, all that has to happen is the girl has to say "No." His point is that the definition of rape has changed a lot over time, not that saying "let's not go forward with this act" will save a woman from rape.

But to come off of my devil's advocate horse, I do agree: there's a huge problem in America when men like this have the power to legislate things like abortion.
