cabin pressure replay - 1x06: fitton

Right, Fitton. I should warn you that this post may consist entirely of nonsensical rambling. It fact, you should just assume that it will.

  • Captain Wing Commander Sir Arthur Shappey. I know I said Cremona has my favourite opening but I’ve changed my mind. This is obviously the best one.
  • Arthur takes loads of milk and four sugars in his tea. *adds to mental list of fictional characters and how they like their tea/coffee* I’m not the only person who does that, right?
  • Arthur, what on earth is that noise supposed to be? And while we’re on the subject: Douglas, you are not allowed to sing. It’s doing things to me. Stop it now.
  • The Hound of the Baskerville! I’ve taken the S off! That will never not make me laugh. Aside from the Sherlock connections, it’s the way he says it. He’s so proud of it and it’s rubbish. Oh Martin, never change.
  • No really Douglas, stop singing. I beg of you.
  • I’m wondering why he always calls on the 12th of November. Is there some significance to that date?

  • I love these episodes where they stick all the characters together and let them talk. We get all this back story, all these lovely little details. Douglas wanted to be a doctor medical student, Arthur wanted to be a pilot, Martin wanted to be an aeroplane. Then they go and break my heart with Arthur’s interview story and Martin’s raft analogy. And to cap it all, Douglas being hopelessly romantic and tracking down his wife’s favourite brown sauce for their anniversary. And we find all this out in just two scenes. It’s perfect.
  • Oh, this scene with Carolyn and Arthur kills me. Well, I don’t want to… I think you should do whatever you think but… just thinking about myself, I don’t know what I’d do with the money that would be better than getting to go up in a plane all the time with you guys. But that’s just me being selfish. She’s worrying about what’s going to happen to him when she’s not there any more but he just wants to them have fun while they’re still together. He’s not expecting any inheritance. He doesn’t want her money. He’d much rather she spent everything she has on keeping MJN going for as long as possible and left him nothing. And he thinks that he’s selfish for wanting that. Arthur, I love you, you precious thing.

  • The way Douglas talks about Helena. Ugh. This episode is just one big pile of feels.
  • Arthur’s happiness speech is actually the best thing. He’s quite wise in this episode really. The whole bath moments thing is a great philosophy to have in life and it has helped me through a couple of rough moments in the last few months.
  • No one really likes apples. That would be like liking… wood. Can I just say something about this line? When he said it I thought it was a weird thing to say but then I realised that he’s right, I don’t really like apples. I like them when they’re in a pie or a crumble (or a strudel!) but on their own? Meh. I can take or leave them. I just never realised it until he said it. Anyway…
  • OK, it turns out there is something worse than Douglas singing, and it’s all of them singing. Who said this was allowed? I once cried listening to this part. I was on the bus. People were looking. That is what this show has reduced me to.
  • Arthur would rather have pineapple juice than wine? Seriously, me and him are practically the same person at this point.
  • Oh Douglas, you are breaking my heart in this one. The way he just comes out and says it, that he hasn’t had a drink for eight years. He’s obviously put a great deal of effort into concealing that and then he just tells them. Because he’s Douglas Richardson and he always has a way out. He will fix this problem, even if it means revealing something terribly personal. He’s just… ugh. I love him.
  • On a less serious note, Martin and Carolyn are hysterical when they’re pissed. And as I believe I have mentioned on several occasions, I love that Arthur and Martin swap clothes. It’s adorable.
  • Not to mention, my 30 years of flying experience. I see Martin’s ability to put his foot has rubbed off. Either that or Arthur’s just really good at impersonating him.
  • Bye, Skipper! I loved being you. / Oh, well. Glad somebody does. Seriously, this episode is killing me.
  • And that’s from Carolyn Knapp-Shappey, CEO My Jet Now Air. Thank you so much. The reveal of what MJN stands for is so perfect. I love it.
  • Oh, this last scene. My heart. It’s the hint of fear in Douglas’s voice when he realises Martin’s on his doorstep, the way he tries to get rid of him, hoping he can bluff his way through this without having to admit that he’s lied. And then Helena’s there and he’s forced to introduce them and hope that Martin will play along. Like in the previous episode, we’re seeing that vulnerability again, the embarrassment that he’s not a captain any more. And the fact that it’s Martin that’s stumbled upon his secret. It’s a brilliant end to the episode and to the series.
Final thoughts: This episode is so perfect I want to cry. And that’s all I’m going to say because this is long enough already. I told you I had a lot of feelings about Fitton.
