Anakin hated the color purple. It always reminded him of Mace Windu, who hated him for some reason, even though Anakin had never done anything to offend him. Well, not purposely anyway.

Purple reminded him of his shortcomings and failures as a Jedi. Of his fear and his anger and his emotional attachments. It reminded him that he wasn't perfect and never would be, especially in the eyes of the Council.

So when Obi-Wan handed him a purple dress, he wanted to burn it.

"I can't possibly wear this," he protested, holding the offensive garment with two fingers and at arm's length.

"I assure you, it's your size," Obi-Wan replied calmly.

"But it's purple." Anakin knew he sounded like a petulant child, but he couldn't help it.

"Anakin, it was the only dress they had in your size. You are rather tall, you know."

"So tell me again why you can't be the girl."

"I have yet to encounter a human female with a beard, and I am not about to shave."

"You should. It makes you look old."

"That is neither here nor there, Padawan. Now will you please put the dress on? There are some other items in that bag." Obi-Wan indicated with his finger. "We'll be arriving shortly."

Anakin reluctantly took the bag and headed to the rear compartment of the small shuttle they were in. When he emerged, he was unrecognizable. Obi-Wan did a double take, looking Anakin over from head to toe.

His hair was hidden underneath a long wig the same shade as his natural hair. Blue eyes were accented by mascara and eyeliner, and his already full lips were colored a deep crimson. The dress, amazingly, hid well the fact that Anakin was built as a man. He had some sort of figure-enhancing device on underneath the plum-colored garment, giving him a well-proportioned bosom, and the skirt was apparently designed to hide his lack of feminine hips. He had even shaved his legs, Obi-Wan noted. Anakin tottered slightly as he walked, hindered by the matching purple high-heeled shoes.

"These blasted things will be the death of me," he complained, not noticing Obi-Wan's awestruck stare.

"Yes." Obi-Wan coughed and blinked rapidly, tearing his gaze away from Anakin's body and focusing on the shoes. "I think you're quite tall enough as it is, but you can't wear your boots with that dress."

Anakin sat down heavily in a nearby chair, removing the shoes. He ignited his lightsaber, startling Obi-Wan, who opened his mouth to protest. Before he could utter a sound, however, Anakin had neatly severed the heels from the soles of the shoes.

Standing easily this time, Anakin let a satisfied smile grace his painted lips. "Much better," he said. He looked at Obi-Wan, examining the disguise he was wearing.

A pair of rough blue pants were slung low on his hips, and he wore a tight black short-sleeved shirt. Anakin gazed appreciatively at his master, admiring the way the clothing clung in just the right places.

"Well," Obi-Wan said, "we've landed." He gestured to the exit, offering an arm to Anakin, who took it. "Shall we?"

Hours later, in the plush room their hosts had provided, Anakin extracted himself from the satin covers of the bed. He looked at the purple material pooled on the floor as he passed it on the way to the 'fresher, thinking that it had been worth the trouble.

He could almost taste the success of the mission, though he was careful not to be overconfident. When he was done in the refresher, he crawled back into bed, and a sated, half-asleep Obi-Wan curled against him. Anakin smiled, enjoying the moment. He wrapped his arms around the older man, reveling in the warmth of his partner.

Yeah, he thought, wearing that damn purple dress had definitely been worth it.
