It was taken in 1883 while he was in Harrar, Ethiopia. He was 29. This is the same year he first mentioned the pain in his knee that would eventually become cancer and finally death in 1891.
Ah, thanks for the info. I was going to guess it was taken while he was in Ethiopia, but I wasn't sure of the dates. I wish the photo wasn't so grainy so his face was more visible but I guess that's asking too much for 1883 and all.
Do you know what book, if any, that one above is in?
The only other self-portrait of his that I've seen is the one of him leaning on a fence, also from 1883. In the biography that I have there a couple of Harrar photos that are really quite good for the time. I wish the portraits of him were that good.
