So, I was out for coffee with Lena last night, and we're chatting, and in the subject of the conversation we mention something about how it doesn't hurt when you get cut or something like that until you look at it, particularly the blood. So, then, of course, I have this totally demented thought go through my head, and because it's me, I share it.

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
Don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

As far as the pain thing goes...
Not all injuries actually cause pain. Some areas of the body just aren't susceptible to it. However, that random look down and realizing you're injured still causes pain. Only because your mind says, "I'm bleeding, it must hurt."
A blind man would actually react much different though. It's been proven that humans lacking one sense will have the other 4 try and adapt, or heighten, in order to try and make up for that. In other words, your average blind man will usually have a better sense of touch, then you or me. Making him much less likely to not feel the pain.
Also, there's always shock. Your body's way of saying, "This sense is providing overwhelming feedback. I think I'll shut it down."

You theory has its merits and is completely sequitur (I figured I'd butcher some Latin phrases while we were discussing such an act). I personally find that I don't get frenzied about cutting myself until I look down and think, "Oh my gosh, the blood's coming..." Usually this happens when I'm shaving my legs and drop the shaver, which grazes my skin horizontally.
The second thought that goes through my mind is, "Rinsing off this lotion is going to sting...Yeeeee Owwwww!"
