Summary: Very AU. Luke's a rent boy, working the streets.

These are my two favourite lines, the first from Luke and the second, Noah:

"Noah acted like I had handed him a winning lottery ticket, the chump."
"You know, you at least owe me enough to cut the fucking crap."

I'm awfully glad that Noah's not going to fall for Luke's pathetic attempt to seduce him, and that Luke realizes, somewhere deep inside, that this moment is a game-changer.

I also like the glimpses of just how messed up Luke's life has been.

Noah's a little unbelievably sweet, but then that's what Luke needs right now. My new GF is just that sweet and generous, so it's not like it never happens.

It's bad of me, but I've enjoyed writing Luke as sooo damaged, mean and horribly cynical. I can't imagine after living the life he has, he'd be anything but. And it's been interesting contrasting Luke's deep anger and urge to manipulate with Noah's steady patience and good nature.

My big worry has been that Noah is now coming off as an unrealistic goody two shoes. Not many people would go this far, or put up with Luke's crap-although they are out there, thank god.

But hang in there. There's a reason why Noah does what he does, and it's not altogether altruistic.

Just sayin' ;)

And judging by you, I'd say your GF is lucky as well.

That's our Noah. So compassionate. Luke's in good hands and already under the spell of "Tall guy." :)

I know. I always hated that Noah got labeled cold and standoffish at times when he was probably the most stand up guy in Oakdale. Yeah, he had emotional issues, but Noah, nine times out of ten would do the right thing.

I love our "Tall Guy".

And I'm afraid the Muse is brooking no argument from me as to story length.

Another thought: I was always of the opinion that time spent at the idyllic Snyder farm was a killer of good fanfic, but in this case I'm hoping Luke can do a "prodigal son" and go home again.

I'm hoping so hard.

Well, I love Snyder farm, mostly because I grew up on a farm that boarded and raised horses-in Illinois, no less. But I get what you are saying-Oakdale and the farm can sometimes be too much of a cliche or a crutch.

As far as my own writing is concerned, I've had a lot of fun either expanding on Oakdale itself or taking the boys out of that environment entirely.

This story though, truly calls for a prodigal moment-although bear with me. It might take awhile.

How did I miss this before? (Oh, yeah, my laptop died. Well anyway). There's SO MUCH to flail over, I don't even know how to narrow it down enough to address any of it. But I will try.

Luke is just so palpably... I guess broken is maybe the word I'm looking for? Like over time, life has chipped away at what used to be youth and optimism and dreams, leaving hopelessness and emptiness in its place. It seems like he survives mostly out of habit; not because he has any real belief that things will ever look up
