A few drops of blood fell on the sheet of ice covering the floor.
Not that either of the combatants really noticed, mind. The only way the state of the floor affected them was making them more careful about the slippery surface. That much came naturally to them, hardly requiring conscious thought as they ran, dodged, leaped and attacked much as usual. Adelheid had a slight advantage from the terrain, obviously, both because she was more used to dealing with it and because she had a degree of control over it, but the difference was negligible at their skill level. At the end of the day, both were exhausted, panting, and utterly satisfied by the time Hibari finally pinned her to the wall and declared the class over.
"Most excellent, Suzuki Adelheid." He smirked at her as he finally released her, stepping back. The flames from his ring died down a bit, though there was still a barely noticeable flare about the stone. "Your control has improved significantly."
"Still not quite good enough." She returned the smirk, pushing a lock of hair from her face. "I won't be satisfied until I see you on the ground."
"In that case, you will have to wait quite a bit." Hibari chuckled, wiping a few stray drops of blood from his face. There were a few shallow wounds on both of them, though nothing serious. They could control themselves better than that. "You can go. I still need to finish up something here."
"That, and Cavallone-sensei should be arriving soon, as per his routine," she said wryly. Oh, she knew her teacher quite well by now.
"That, and Cavallone should be arriving soon." Kyouya's lips twitched. "Now, shoo. I can handle the rest of this." He indicated the ice scattered about the classroom in her wake.
"As though I want to see any more of you two together than absolutely necessary." She returned his smirk before heading for the door. There was still a faint shine about her ring as well, a part of her attention tuned to the ice. After their long spar, there was quite a lot of it spattered around, still.
True to the couple’s conversation, not long after their small talk, the Don Cavallone arrived in the training building. As he went to the first training room, he could already see that Kyouya was done with his spar with Miss Adel. Dino was slightly disappointed, since he actually loved to see Kyouya fighting to his heart’s content, especially when his opponent was not Dino, because the expression on Kyouya’s face at that time was utterly fascinating.
Adelheid walked through to the other training hall, having left her things in a changing room at the opposite end of the facility. She wasn't too surprised to see Dino entering, and nodded a brief greeting to the teacher.
Kyouya took a moment to survey the damage done to the hall in the wake of their spar, slowly walking over the badly battered and dented ice. He glanced through the doorway after Adelheid just to see Dino entering.
Dino returned Adel’s nod with a grin. “Another satisfactory class, Miss Adel?” He asked, trying to open a small talk with the girl since Kyouya, apparently, was still busy in the training hall, doing what, though, Dino couldn’t tell.
"As always." Adelheid couldn't help but smirk a bit. "Hibari-sensei is still back there."
“I’ve noticed.” Dino returned with a chuckle. “Well, then, I won’t hold you back any longer. You are on your way to the shower room, I trust?” He smiled, nodding slightly before turning around and continuing his walk to the other training hall. Dino’s grin widened when he saw Kyouya glancing at him and he called out at his lover. “Kyouya~!”
Adelheid nodded, then turned to look at the blonde walking across the room. So typical.
Kyouya returned Dino's call with a smirk and a nod. Oh, he'd been waiting for Dino to show up. There was something he needed to discuss with him. Something involving a certain little something hung on a chain around his neck.
Afterwards, Adelheid couldn't exactly tell what her thought process was at the time. The flame on her ring almost itched for her to act as her mind registered the facts of the situation. Dino was there, the best witness she could hope for. He saw Hibari, yet didn't have a clear view of the other training hall. Hibari's attention was entirely on Dino for that split second.
Half conscious thought, half instinct, the flames on her ring flared, sending a signal to the ice still spread beneath her teacher's feet. Immediately a curved blade shot up from the ground, behind his back and out of Dino's sight, as deadly as any of her own strikes as it shot towards its target.
Kyouya was just about to call out to Dino as he suddenly felt the overwhelming, tearing pain of something sharp and cold quite effortlessly piercing his body from behind, words dying on his lips as he found himself coughing up blood instead.
Dino’s smile frozen on his face when he suddenly saw something piercing through Kyouya’s chest, making his beloved cough up blood. A lot of it. The Don Cavallone’s hazel eyes widened in fright and he immediately ran up to Kyouya’s side. “KYOUYA!” Dino was only able to catch Kyouya’s body in time before it fell to the ground.
“Kyouya! Kyouya, shit! Shit shit shit!!” Dino cursed, hastily checking for Kyouya’s injury. From the wound, Dino could tell that Kyouya was pierced by something really sharp from behind his back. Dino’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t see anyone in the room except for Kyouya, so who might have attacked his lover...?
Dino swore he would get into the culprit, but now, he had more important thing to do: making sure Kyouya didn’t lose too much blood. The blond man immediately rummaged around his pocket for a Sun Weapon Box. He found it easily enough, since he knew he always brings a Sun and Sky weapon boxes with him. The problem was to find the matching ring for the weapon box, though, because Dino didn’t think he had any high purity Sun Ring on him at the moment.
“Damn it! Damn it, where the fuck is that damn ring?!” Dino cursed, tears of frustration welled up in his eyes. He had to find the Sun Ring... he had to, or he might not be able to save Kyouya in time and... No, Dino didn’t want to think about it.
"Sensei!" The shock in Adelheid's voice was genuine. She could hardly believe she'd actually done that. She immediately ordered the ice to retreat; by the time Dino reached his lover, her weapon had joined the crumbling ice covering the floor, the blood splatter hardly all that suspicious as her teacher was quite busy rapidly bleeding to death. She rushed after Dino, managing to get past him into the hall, making her best show of looking around for any signs of a culprit. Her heart was running like a frightened hare. What, oh what had she been thinking...
Cold. Kyouya felt cold, cold and dizzy as blood flowed out of him without any apparent intention to stop. He was vaguely aware that Dino gathered him close, aware that his body wanted to shut down on him but not about to let it. He wouldn't die like this, damn it. He wouldn't die like this.
He saw Adelheid rushing past them, heard quiet curses as she darted around the hall, and wished he'd had the energy to speak up. It had been... cold. Cold like the ice under him.
Refusing to give in to the threatening darkness looming about him, he reached for the chain around his neck. Tugging at it, he somehow managed to pull out the ring he'd been hiding under his shirt. "Cava...llone..."
Dino didn’t even took notice as to what Adelheid was doing, so focused he was on his task of searching for a damn Sun Ring. He certainly noticed the movement of Kyouya’s hand, though, and he immediately turned his attention to his lover, knowing Kyouya well enough to know that he wouldn’t do anything pointless, especially not at time like this.
As Dino saw Kyouya pulling a ring out under his shirt, the first thing that went through Dino’s mind was that he hoped it was a Sun Ring. After that, though, he didn’t think much else, simply taking the ring from Kyouya and putting it on his finger, inwardly praying to whatever God there was that it could produce enough Sun Flame for him to open the Weapon Box.
The Don Cavallone could almost weep in relief when he managed to produce just the amount of Flame he needed. Hastily, Dino opened the Weapon Box and proceeded to heal Kyouya using it. No, Dino wouldn’t be able to heal Kyouya fully, mainly because Sun Flame was not his main Flame, so it was certainly weaker than, say, Ryouhei’s flame. It would, at the very least, stop Kyouya’s bleeding, though, and Dino hoped it’d be enough for now.
“Please don’t die, Kyouya... please.” Dino pleaded while he kept healing Kyouya. His lover felt cold even in his arms and the thought of Kyouya dying was actually so terrifying Dino didn’t even realized that he was crying.
Kyouya didn't answer, having lapsed out of consciousness, limp and lifeless in Dino's arms. The ring, however, was warm in Dino's hand, the high-purity flames flickering yellow and orange at the same time, an obvious mix had the distressed man paid enough attention to realize it. The finely carved outline of a skylark on the side of the ring seemed to darken at an accidental smear of blood.
Adelheid almost wanted to curse aloud as she saw Dino using the Sun Box, but wasn't exactly stupid enough for that. It wouldn't matter, she told herself. Hibari was badly hurt in the best case, and lost in the worst, and in any case she'd attacked from behind and he probably hadn't even had time to realize what happened. It wouldn't matter.
"...Cavallone-sensei?" she finally dared ask, not sure if Dino would hear or even notice her.
Dino might have registered the color of the flames, but he surely hadn’t had the time to actually think or took notice as to what it meant. He was almost overwhelmed with panic when he felt Kyouya going limp in his arms and he could only focus in producing more Sun Flame. It was tiring, undoubtedly, even more so because Dino wasn’t used in producing such a large amount of Sun Flame like this, but he did think it was worth it as he saw Kyouya’s wound, so very slowly, starting to close.
The blond man certainly heard Adelheid calling his name, but he paid the girl no heed. He just needed to focus on closing Kyouya’s wound a little bit more and, hopefully, Kyouya would stop bleeding. Dino just hoped the man would wake up again.
Once Kyouya’s wound was closed, the Sun Flames on Dino’s ring immediately died down and he was panting heavily. Dino ignored his own exhaustion in order to turn his head slightly so that he would be able to see Adelheid. “...Miss Adel, please help me bringing Kyouya to the infirmary.” He requested in remarkably calm voice. To be honest, Dino didn’t think that the infirmary would be able to provide enough care for Kyouya. Even if Dino had stopped the bleeding, he hadn’t fixed any internal damages that the man would surely had.
Dino’s hands were stained with Kyouya’s blood, but he didn’t seem to realize it as he ran one hand through his hair in agitated manner, murmuring, “Actually, I don’t think the infirmary will be adequate enough... Kyouya should be brought to the hospital. I don’t think he-” Dino’s voice broke and he swallowed but didn’t finish that statement.
"I... maybe we should call an ambulance," Adelheid murmured. Come on, Adelheid, act normal. Well, as normal as you can in this situation. Frankly, she couldn't even figure out just why she was so shaken; she'd fought and even killed people before with little trouble or remorse. Why, then, were her hands still shaking now? "It'd be the fastest way... I -- my cell phone is in the changing room, should I go get it or..."
“Yes, yes, ambulance... that’s an excellent idea.” Dino murmured, clearly still distressed. “No, use my cell phone, Miss Adel.” With that, Dino took out his cell phone and gestured for Adel to take it. “It’d be faster if you used this...”
Adelheid took the phone and dialled emergency. Normal, remember. Normal. Calm down, deep breaths, control yourself. Don't panic either way.
She heard her own voice explaining the situation as though from far away, heard the responses, yes of course we'll have an ambulance there in just a moment, yes we've confirmed the address please try to bear for a bit.
Calm down. Control yourself. Normal, normal, normal.
At some point, she realized, she had knelt down next to the two men, her mainly bare legs hardly even stinging from the coldness of the ice, blood staining her clothes.
Meanwhile, as he waited for Adel to call the ambulance, Dino cradled Kyouya’s limp body close, trying his best to warm the cold body up. He closed his eyes while resting his cheek on top of Kyouya’s head, trying to hold the tears at bay.
It was slightly ridiculous how much the situation frightened Dino since he was not a stranger to death. He had certainly seen a lot of his subordinates dying in front of him, but never once he felt this cold fear that seemed to take a firm hold around his chest. “Please don’t die, Kyouya... please...” he whispered softly, hoping that Kyouya would, somehow, heard and retorted with a sarcastic reply.
There was no response. Kyouya remained silent and unresponsive, his head leaning against Dino's chest, blood staining him all over. His hand was still clutching onto the chain that had held the ring now in Dino's hand, the usually purple stone on his own engagement ring stained red.
Finally, Adelheid finished the call. "They -- they said an ambulance will be here in just a few minutes," she said. "We should keep him still for now..." She swallowed. Time to cover her tracks some more. "Cavallone-sensei... I can't find any traces of the attacker per se, but... someone's used mist here just a bit ago. I mean, I'm still not very good at detecting such things, and Hibari-sensei did use mist during our spar so I might be just mistaken, but I'm fairly sure..."
Dino was still for a moment before he lifted his head slightly to gaze at Adelheid with cold eyes, void of any warmth that usually was always there. “Is that so?” It certainly explained why Dino, and even Kyouya, didn’t notice the attack. Mist users are well-known for their abilities of hiding their presence. “Do you see anyone else going out and/or inside of this building who is also a Mist user, Miss Adelheid?” Dino would need all the information he could gather in order to actually find the bastard and kill them, after all.
Adelheid was startled by the look in Dino's eyes but forced herself to calm down, shaking her head, terribly pale. "I didn't see anyone... but someone might have snuck in while we were sparring. I mean, the first thing Hibari-sensei ever taught me about Mist flame is that it can make your opponent invisible..." The simpler the lie, and the more truth there was mixed in, the easier it would be to hold onto it.
“That’s true. It’s one of the many reasons why Kyouya hates mist users so much... He always says that they are cowards.” Dino sighed, closing his eyes again. Well, it was logical. Only Mist users would be able to completely hide their presence from other people and, Dino’s jaw tightened, Dino wouldn’t be surprised if they chose to stab Kyouya from the back. The problem now is to eliminate the Mist users, though, and, considering Kyouya’s interaction with Mist users, there were quite a lot of Mist users that might want to harm him.
Dino would certainly look deeper into this matter once he was sure Kyouya was alright. “...I’m sorry to hold you up here, Miss Adelheid. Do you want to go?” He asked, glancing at Adelheid with warmer eyes. Even so, Dino was actually relieved to have someone else there with him.
"I -- I'd rather stay, if you don't mind." A part of her, Adelheid found, was wishing that Hibari just died there in Dino's arms, died and left Vongola that much weaker and more vulnerable. Another, surprisingly large part, was actually wishing he would hang on and continue breathing just a bit longer, just a moment longer, just a bit... "I... it's my fault." She didn't have to fake the choked tone of her voice; it was genuine. "He used so much flames while we sparred, I don't -- If he hadn't done so, I'm sure he'd have noticed... he wouldn't be lying here. If I hadn't fought with him..." It was true, anyway. If she hadn't been there, he wouldn't have been hurt. "He never lets anyone catch him by surprise..."
“Of course I don’t mind, Miss Adel. Thank you,” Dino said, finally managing to give a soft smile to the girl. That smile faded, though, as he sighed when he heard Adel’s next words. “You and I both know that he would never restraint the amount of flame he used while sparring, Miss Adel. Besides, Kyouya wouldn’t want to fight half-heartedly, especially not against his favorite opponent.” Dino smiled thinly. “It might be true that if you hadn’t fought with him, he wouldn’t be... hurt, but you could never know about that back then. Now, though, there’s no use in thinking about the ifs, because no one would be able to turn back the time and change the past.”
“For now... we just can hope that Kyouya would be alright. He is so stubborn, though... I doubt he will let even Death takes him away if he doesn’t want to.” He said in light tone, trying to think positively. That was Dino’s strong point anyway, right? He was a fool, so he would always hope for the best. “Now, where is that damn ambulance?” He murmured. Kyouya’s face was getting paler as time passed by.
"Of course not." Adelheid wasn't sure if she wanted to believe it or not, herself. Either way, the ambulance arrived soon, paramedics rushing in to gather Hibari's unmoving body. They didn't seem to even blink at the sight of blood-spattered ice indoors, or the lack of visible wound on their patient, simply asking Dino just what had happened. Obviously, this wasn't their first trip to the university grounds.
Dino tried his best to answer the paramedics’ questions in calm manner. Unfortunately, since he didn’t see the attacker or the weapon used to pierce Kyouya, his answer helped a little. He also told them that, although he had stopped Kyouya’s bleeding, they should fix Kyouya’s inner injuries as soon as possible. Once the questions had run out, Dino asked the paramedics whether he could come with them to the hospital or not. Obviously, Dino wouldn’t take a no as an answer and, luckily, the paramedics seemed to know that.
At this point Adelheid excused herself. She felt quite shaken, and the situation wasn't exactly helping. Fortunately, this happened quite easily as the paramedics quickly whisked Hibari off to the hospital, taking Dino with them as well. Adelheid was left alone, blood splattered about the ice beneath her, staining her hands and clothes as she knelt on the ice that had long since ceased to burn her numb skin with its coldness.
At some point, she started laughing, a broken, hysterical laughter that held no delight or joy, her voice echoing in the empty hall.
