The first thing Adelheid realized was that everything hurt.
For a moment she could do little but just lie there, trying to get her bearings. At last she gathered herself enough to concentrate on what she sensed beyond the pain.
She was lying on her side, she noted, propped up in part by what she presumed to be pillows. From what she could tell, she was in some manner of a bed. Hospital?
After some effort, she managed to force her eyes open. Blinking at the harsh lights at first, she then looked around what little she could, even simple movements sending flashes of pain through her.
Someone was sitting beside her bed. Someone very familiar.
"...Julie?"
Julie had been in the process of dozing off. He had gotten little to no sleep the entire time that they had been here. He couldn’t get any sleep. Each time that he had closed his eyes, he saw his claws digging deep into Adelheid’s back, could feel her blood on him. Every time he went to the bathroom, he scrubbed his hands almost raw because he imagined the blood was still on them.
When he heard her voice though, he practically shot up in his chair, his eyes wide. It hadn’t been the first time he had heard her voice, but it was the first time he had seen her eyes open. He was on his knees next to the bed quickly, taking her hand in his own.
“I’m here, Adel. I’m here baby.”
Julie. Julie really was here, holding her hand. "I... I'm alive?"
He nodded a little bit, giving her hand a squeeze. “Yes, you’re alive. You’ve been asleep for a while though.”
"...Ah." She paused for a bit, gathering her memories. "I was... hurt."
Julie nodded again. “Yes, you were hurt badly. You lost a lot of blood.”
"Yes." That much she could remember. "I... you got me help." The last thing she could remember was Julie carrying her, calling for someone, anyone to help.
“Yeah. There were two people there, illusionists I think. They were able to get you some help. I...I don’t know who they were though.”
"Illusionists?" Adelheid blinked. She... wasn't sure what to think about that. On one hand, there was Spade, but... on the other hand, there was Hibari. "I see... I'm glad." She closed her eyes for a moment, swallowing. "I'm glad I didn't..." She didn't finish.
“I’m sorry.” He squeezed her hand, his own eyes closing. He tried to swallow back the lump in his throat and hold back the tears that threatened to spill out. “I’m so sorry. I never wanted...I wouldn’t...I’m sorry.”
"I know," she murmured. "I know, Julie... you would never hurt me on purpose." At least that much she could be sure about.
“I still...” He lifted a hand to brush against her cheek. “I was so scared that you wouldn’t wake up.”
"As though I could leave you like that." And to think of him getting accused of... hurting her... was painful. It had been an accident; she knew that much.
He rested his forehead against hers lightly. “You better not. I’ve been lost without you while you were asleep. I don’t know what I’d do if...” It hurt to think about it.
"How badly was I hurt, anyway?" she asked in a murmur. "Losing blood isn't all that accurate."
Julie looked down, giving her hand a squeeze. “I...don’t want to tell you.”
"Julie." Her hand gripped his as tightly as she could manage. "Tell me." If he didn't want to tell her, that just meant she had to know.
“You...you’ll make a full recovery. You should be able to sit up soon and be able to move about not long after that. You’ll have to wait to fight though.” It wasn’t everything, but it was a start.
Adelheid frowned. She knew it wasn't everything, just from the way he failed to meet her eyes. "But?" She knew there would be a but. And if it was bad enough Julie couldn't even tell her...
“But...there is some permanent damage.” Julie looked down, unable to meet Adelheid’s eyes. “The claws...when they went in, they hit...One hit your uterus. They say that they’ll be scar tissue and...” Julie trailed off, unable to continue.
Adelheid swallowed. That... that didn't sound good. "And...?" She had to know.
“The doctors, they don’t know if you can have children. And if you do, it will be very dangerous.” This time, he couldn’t hold back the tears. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”
"...No." And yet, she knew he was telling the truth. Julie would not claim something like that unless it was true. He would not be that cruel to her. "Please, no..."
“I’m sorry. I didn’t...I know that you wanted to, one day...” He didn’t know if he would ever be able to look at her again. “I’m sorry I took your dream away from you.”
"But... it's not fair." Adelheid shook her head slowly, a hand rising to her face. "It's not fair," she whispered again, mostly to herself, tears trickling between her pale fingers. "I... I'm not asking much, am I? Just... a future. A future where I could tuck my child to sleep and not wonder if I will see them in the morning... it's not much. I don't think it's too much."
She was almost rambling now, but then she believed she had an excuse to be somewhat out of sorts. "I want a family I can raise without fear and hunger and tears. Just the family I... used to dream of at night..." Still dreamed of. The dreams had only been getting more frequent since her trip to the world of the future.
Her voice barely above a broken whisper, "Just one child, please... just one child with red hair and eyes..."
Julie let out a choked sob as he listened to her. “I know, baby, I know. I want...I want that too. It could still happen.”
"Promise?" She lowered her hand enough to look at him with teary eyes, desperation replacing logic for the second. "Promise me I will have a family?"
“I promise.” He rested his forehead against hers, eyes closed. “I promise that we’ll have a family, no matter what.”
We. Yes. That sounded good. Surely, that would be a promise Julie would keep.
"It hurts, Julie," she whispered. She wasn't even sure if she was referring to physical pain.
“I know baby. I wish...I wish I could take away your pain. I wish I was the one in the bed right now. You don’t...you don’t deserve this.”
"...No." She closed her eyes, tears clinging to the thick lashes. "The worst thing is... I think I do." Not the part about family, perhaps... but certainly the pain.
“No you don’t. Look at me, Adelheid.”
Slowly, she opened her eyes, looking him in the eye. "I attacked him from behind, Julie," she whispered. "He has taught me to be stronger, has devoted so many hours to training him, helped me when other teachers have given me trouble... and I thanked him by trying to kill him in the most cowardly manner right in front of his lover."
“You did what you thought you had to for our family. You don’t deserve...this because of it.” He was firm and unwavering. He pressed his lips to hers softly and murmured against them. “You never deserved this.”
"It's not fair..." Sadly, as she well knew, life was not fair. It never had been. Not for them.
“It’s not baby. But we’ll get past this. We’ll have a family, I’ll make sure of it.”
"...Yeah." She took a moment to calm herself down, fighting against more tears. At last, she thought to ask, "How long has it been?"
“It’s been three days. You’ve been asleep for three days now.” The scariest three days of his life.
"...Ah." Adelheid paused. "Has... anything happened?" Regarding Hibari. The search for his attacker. Anything.
“I...don’t know. I’ve been here the entire time.” He gave her hand a squeeze. “I haven’t left your side.”
"Ah." She managed a small, wavering smile. "You look terrible."
Julie gave a watery laugh. “That’s what happens when you don’t sleep for a while.”
"Then go to sleep." She squeezed his hand. "I won't go anywhere. I promise." Besides, she needed some time to... think.
“...I’m not leaving you.”
"At least get a proper nap." She looked at him. "Please." No need for either of them to feel even worse.
“Adelheid. I’m not leaving you, no matter what.” He looked at her. “I’ll find a way to sleep here.”
"As long as you get some sleep." She sighed. "It's bad enough one of us is too weak to stand..."
“I can still stand. I’ve gotten a little sleep.” He sighed as well. “Maybe I can get them to bring in a cot or something.”
"Julie... please." Her hand tightened upon his again. "I don't want you punishing yourself like this..."
“I’m not.” He really was, but he wasn’t going to say that to her. “I’m just worried. And I can’t sleep when I’m worried.”
Adelheid closed her eyes. "I see. So you'll rather make me worry."
“I’m not trying to make you worry. I’m going to get some sleep. I’m just....not ready to yet.”
"...Promise me you will."
“I promise that I will.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I will when you will.”
"Mean..." And yet, she was tired. So very tired.
He smiled. “I just want to make sure my favorite person gets all of her rest.”
"Just make sure you do, too..." Then maybe, she could sleep.
And hope she wouldn't be in quite so much pain while she did.
“...Do you want me to call a nurse to give you something to dull the pain a little?”
"Please." A whisper.
Julie nodded and stood, walking over to the door. He peaked out the door and waved a nurse over, leading her inside. “Hopefully she has something strong enough.”
Adelheid answered the nurse's questions as best as she could, all the time wishing she'd have just got on with it. At last the nurse decided she could handle a little relief, adding some medicine to the IV bag attached to her arm.
Adelheid fell asleep soon afterwards, her hand still seeking Julie's.
As soon as the nurse was gone, Julie sat next to the bed, taking Adelheid’s hand again. After making sure she was asleep, he leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes. Maybe it was time for him to get some sleep.
Even as he drifted off though, he didn’t let go of her hand.
