is it later now?

Okay, it is time for me to re-enter the world of the living, or at least livejournaling. The old excuse of 'no time on the computer' has been gone for a couple of months now, and the reminders to keep in touch have been building up as well ( Read more... )

I had the same thing when I was in San Francisco, also when Miah and Katie stayed here. But that was also partly because of the American media saturation we get around the world. It was pretty easy to look into the faces of real Americans and notice that they are the same. Maybe it's just that foreigners tend to be on their best behaviour when a tall white man visits their shit?

I think it's easy to like another culture because its stupidity usually doesn't involve you. Loud Chileans in a restaurant in Sydney for example would just be like "hehe foreigners" as a release valve sort of thing, but when your own countrymen/peers do it, you can't dismiss it easily because you know them too well - embarassment by association.

Another interesting point I think is the general level of casual racial labelling in non-Western countries. You can call a spade a spade, it seems, and nobody takes offence because it's just a name. Is there actual racism in Chile?

Kacey is in Mexico right now dealing with a big-time language barrier. She's volunteered to teach some children "drama" or something. The only bad thing is that she doesn't have a helper to translate, none of her kids speak english, oh, and she doesn't know spanish. (!!)

She says the booze is good and she has a crush on a dude named Paco. That is about it.

Steve and I looked through your pictures, they were really amazing. Steve said Chile looked like it could just as easily be Mars or some other planet.

One more thing, I've gone back to my old opinion that Meg's drumming ruins a lot of good songs. The end.
