I thought I'd be ever so brilliant and set up my pay by phone account this morning so I could easily park in the jungle that is DC. Imagine me surprise when I found an actual space near the job interview site with plenty of time to spare. So I fired up the app, typed in the meter number and...FAIL. No such location. There are apps for pay by phone for iPhone, Android, etc. Once you get them set up, they are wonderful! There is a small service charge for using pay by phone (I think 35 cents?) instead of quarters. However, that is more than made up for by the advantages:
  • You don't have to carry rolls of quarters with you everywhere you go.
  • You can extend your parking time remotely.
  • If you finish earlier than expected, you can cut off parking early and not get charged for the remainder of the time.
Those last two tend to save me more than 35 cents each time, because they mean I'm not having to put in extra quarters just to be on the safe side and I'm not having to run out to put in extra quarters if I underestimate the time.

Much sympathy on the issue! I actually set up pay by phone using the browser on my phone. However, typing in a 16-digit credit card number on the phone was definitely a challenge!
