So, what is the Recast Big Bang, anyway?

It's probably best to start off with what the Recast Big Bang isn't.

- It is not a challenge for general crossovers, which feature characters from two or more fandoms interacting directly.
- It is not a challenge for general AUs, which feature characters from a fandom in new and original situations.

This challenge is specifically for AUs which use the premise and/or plot of one fandom to create a new story for the characters of one or more other fandoms. Hence the "recasting": maybe you've always wanted to see the characters from your favorite fandom or fandoms attend Hogwarts, or join the glee club at McKinley High, or fight demons like the Winchesters. Here's your chance to bring those AU ideas to life.

That sounds fun, but I don't know how much writing I can commit to for this. How long does my fic have to be?

Not as long as you think. While most standard big bangs require fics of 15,000 words or more, fics for the Recast Big Bang must be at least 8,000 words in length. We absolutely welcome and encourage longer fics, but for this round, at least, the word count is lower to encourage as much participation as possible. If you want to write us 80K, by all means, go ahead, but you only have to make it to 8K to play along here.

Interesting, but I'm still not sold yet. When would I have to have all of this written by?

The 2012-2013 Recast Big Bang schedule is as follows:
Signups begin for authors and artists: September 24
Check in: December 20
Rough drafts due for authors: February 18
Story claiming for artists begins: February 21
Final drafts due for artists: April 1
Posting begins: April 3

Alright, I'm sold, but I have a question. I've got this AU idea where the Glee kids defeat Lord Voldemort, but I've already written three chapters of it and posted it to my journal. Can I still play?

If you've already established a recasting universe that you'd like to write in for this big bang, that's fine, but the requirements are as follows:

- You must have no more than 1,000 words previously posted in said verse (unless you'll be starting fresh with a sequel), and
- The aforementioned 1,000 words should not be included as a part of the fic you post for this challenge.

In other words, if you wrote this 300-word drabble this one time that established a verse where Kurt Hummel was Harry Potter, you're free to use that as a launching board to write a full-length fic in that universe, but if you've already started an epic and have several chapters of it posting that you were intending on continuing before you found this big bang, this probably isn't the place for that work to find a home.

The only exception to this rule is in the case of sequels or prequels in an already-establish recasting verse where you'll be starting over from the beginning for this section of the fic. So if you've already got 30,000 words of your theoretical fic where Kurt is Harry Potter that follows the story of the first book, but you want to tackle your sequel where Kurt finds the Chamber of Secrets and start that from scratch, this could be the place for that work to find a home.

Okay, so, that's good to know, but what if in my AU, Chris Colfer is Harry Potter instead of Kurt Hummel?

RPF is absolutely accepted here alongside showverse canons. Just make sure that the work you're using for your premise/plot source material is a fictional canon of some sort. In other words, Chris Colfer as Harry Potter is awesome, but Chris Colfer living Daniel Radcliffe's life is not what we're looking for here.

I read all this, but you still didn't answer my question/I have a very specific scenario that raises questions you're not thinking of. What do I do now?

PM me! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions, and I'll do my best to answer you as quickly as possible.
