Another major contributor to perpetual procrastination is that its attendant fuzzy "goals," those along the lines of "one day, I'll write a book," aren't failable. Logically, there's no way for anyone to prove you haven't hit that target, and there never will be. Haven't put a single word to paper yet? Fine, because, hey, you'll write the book "one day." If your goal is even something as modest as adding to or revising the manuscript every day, you'll know if you're falling short. Paul Graham also wrote a few choice words on the subject:Another test you can use is: always produce. For example, if you have a day job you don't take seriously because you plan to be a novelist, are you producing? Are you writing pages of fiction, however bad? As long as you're producing, you'll know you're not merely using the hazy vision of the grand novel you plan to write one day as an opiate. The view of it will be obstructed by the all too palpably flawed one you're actually writing.
One of the most pernicious aspects of "when I get around to it" goal ( ... )

Yep, that's why they're easier to fudge and cheat.

I'm a Paul Graham fanboy myself -- unfortunately I have read much but internalized little. Thanks for the tips, they're always welcome.
