So, first, an introduction to me. I was raised Roman Catholic. My father is a first-generation Roma immigrant to the United States from Hungary; I was born when he was fifty-two. But you don't live with them anymore, right? You've escaped; they don't get a vote in your life. As much it's painful to go against what you learned, it can also be tremendously liberating, with the right attitude.

Are you currently in therapy? I can't tell you how much it's helped and continues to help me.

I grew up with an abusive parent, as well. In a different way..my father was not religious. In fact, he ridiculed my mom, sister and I for being Catholic and made fun of the faith all the time.

I know it's really hard to get past these memories. I'm still working on it. No matter how many times I hear "You're 30, get past it, he can't hurt you anymore", the pain still stings within.

What helps for me is to awknowledge it and to write and vent about it. I am looking for a decent therapist at the moment, too.

Children, obey your parents (in the Lord), for this is right. "Honor your father and mother."

I always hated that, too.
