I don't disagree with you at all, and I think if people bothered watching the movie, they'd see how it was about girls who, despite being oppressed, don't give up hope and keep on fighting.
I read horrible reviews for it and went and saw it anyway (the only opinion I trust for MY taste in movies is MINE, thankyouverymuch). I can see why they didn't LIKE it (the different eras and the "fantastical" locations for the battles) but the whole point is that that is NOT reality. And frankly, when I'm dreaming, I don't dream of doing to the grocery store, everything being in normal colors, paying for my food, and wearing jeans and a tshirt. ALL OF THAT TO SAY it was good. :)
I think Sucker Punch is cool and feminist in that there are a lot of ladies who kick ass in it, but at the same time it still is a part of the Hollywood machine and therefore tainted by patriarchy -- they are all conventionally attractive and wear somewhat skimpy outfits (tho not nearly as racy as it could have been). Its clear that it is mostly marketed to men who are prolly like "hot chicks and swords YES PLZ"
I read your review and while I agree with everything youre saying overall, in the end, the fact remains that even in this day and age, it is highly unlikely that a movie will be made with a strong lead female role who is not sexualized. Definitely not saying SUCKERPUNCH SUCKS or anything, its cool to see butt kicking female leads period, and especially in action movies.
