honestly i want to write an article about how occupy* is an incredible harbor of racism but i just dont have time. in the "official organizing irc channel" i got called hispanic slurs, told to straight up go back to mexico, when i complained about it i was kicked repeatedly while the people who were dicks to me were totally left alone. it was basically racist privilege bingo 101. need more time! plus i dont really have a place to write it. fffff
idk if i would trust anything related to the occupy movement that uses the label 'official' bc the protesters have been pretty clear that its a leaderless movement, and a lot of the stuff ive read is about how its kind of a free form deal.
not that that excuses or changes your experience in that channel, bc thats horrible what happened. just that those people dont speak for the entire movement.
beyond that though, the word 'occupy' is problematic, for sure, and i dont doubt theres issues of racism coming up in the various cities' occupy groups.
this is the official irc channel on irc.indymedia.org that is being ported everywhere as the organizing irc space, there is the main the official channel, and they have several offshoot channels for other kinds of things (for the various localized ones, a politics channel, etc). all protests have an official irc channel on indymedia. its standard. and even protests who are "leaderless and orgless" have them. ive worked in protests for over 20yr now, particularly leaderless orgged protests. not only are there ALWAYS leaders, there are always the same kinds of infrastructure to put the protests together. they are also using out same txt blast stuff (that i wrote mind you), the same from the street webstreaming infrastructure, and i know several of the people running comms and ops for the wall st specific stuff are the same people who usually run comms and ops for those kinds of protests. this is the big myth about occupy*, it actually does have very clear leaders, they are just anonymous to most outsiders. it is your standard black bloc
( ... )
ahhh. see, i def didnt know it was related to indymedia.
while i do think theres some neat stuff going on right now, i def feel the same way you do about this as some sort of new or different thing. and i am def never down with protests, honestly.
