We downloaded the premiere episode of the new season of Doctor Who last night.
I had to wait until after church to watch it and that was SO painful! It was well worth the wait, although I was a little nervous when the Doctor and Rose had a "moment" when they first landed on New Earth. She gushed something like "It's so beautiful! I love travelling with you!" and I couldn't help an involuntary eyeroll at that sort of 'golly gee' sentimentality. Perhaps it is because I'm still not sold on the cross-species romance. It's not as bad as the Peter McGann movie, but still.
Anyways, the episode was interesting, particularly seeing the return of an interesting villain from Season 1. The idea of highly evolved cats creating a hospital for humans was amusing and the makeup very well done - much better than the Cheetah people from the Sylvester McCoy era episode, Survival. I wonder if there will be a subtle story-arc like Bad Wolf from last season. I felt kind of cheated with the Bad Wolf explanation. I had hoped it'd be a broad conspiracy or something similar to the Blue Sun guys in Firefly. Perhaps that would be too hard with time and space so vast. I hope we see Harriet Jones again. I quite liked her. Especially as Shaun's mum in Shaun of the Dead. Yay Simon Pegg.
I do like David Tennant. We finally saw the latest Harry Potter movie and both said "That's the new Doctor!" at the first shot of Barty Crouch, Jr. I was surprised to find out that he uses a different accent on the show than his native speech. There's an interesting interview with him on Radio 1 with Jo Whiley.
It is pretty cool to be able to watch the episodes more in "real time" and not as ancient re-runs on PBS. I'm looking forward to next Sunday so much more now.
