More PEZ, Please!

Last week on my birthday I received a package from PUC’s World Missions Department. This package contained the latest issue of the Campus Chronicle, notes from my friends at PUC, and several goodies that would be useful to me here. I'm so excited that this helped in your class! I would just caution, however, to use this sparingly. Because you don't want the kids to learn to expect something as a reward for good behavior. They need to behave well because they want to and because they respect you, not because they want a piece of candy. But they have to know what you expect before they'll perform, and the PEZ seems to be working! Positive reinforcement vs. punishment is talked about a lot in my education classes, and nearly everyone says that the former is better and causes a greater - more permanent - response. Random encouragement for good behavior can be really effective. Or you can try the "Big Man/Woman of the Day" game where you pick one child to be the "Big Man/Woman" without anybody else knowing who you picked, and that child does nice things for the other children and behaves properly, but it's all in secret, so at the end of the day, the kids try to guess who was chosen to "do" the good things. Then they're focused on and getting attention for good ( ... )

Teaching is a lot of experimentation! Keep praying, thinking and trying stuff until something works. And don't expect it to work forever. Every class is different. Sounds like this is a great experience for you!
