That's a really tough question. There are so many that I'd want to preserve. The first one the springs to mind is Michael Marshall Smith's "Only Forward". So I'll go with that.
"Spares" was the second one that I thought of, just after I hit "Post Comment". It's the better of the two really, but 'Only Forward' was one of the fist books I truly had difficulty putting down. I think I read it in a day.
Spares is a better written book and has a more coherent narrative but I think that for sheer imagination and for being really ferocious in its style "Only Forward" is better. Only Forward also has the distinction of being both the most stolen AND the most given book in my collection I think I must have bought about 10 copies of the fucker. "One of Us" sucks BTW terrible ending.

The complete works of William Shakespeare would also be out for me, speaking of plays I probably wouldn't put my hand up for "Waiting for Godot" on the grounds that if anyone asked me what my book was about I'd be embarrassed saying that "Nothing happens....twice". Musicals, I could go a musical, perhaps "Les Mis" or "Phantom" but I suppose I'd get annoyed about being looked down upon buy all the other books. I guess I have three main concerns
